FYI--This is the DLLR release that-was just posted
Maryland’s Market Stalls During July
Amid reports of uncertainties in financial markets, declining consumer confidence and
spending and lackluster hiring at the national level, Maryland’s econonic recovery faltered
in July.
Following seasonal adjustment, the number of jobs on Maryland’s industry payrolls was little
changed, rising by just 500 over-the-month. The increase, while marginal, is nonetheless
encouraging considering that national payrolls have declined over the last two months.
The shaving of about 3,400 temporary Census positions was a major drag on Maryland’s business
activity during July, overshadowing the upturns reported in select private sector industries.
Education/Health Care/Social Assistance was the primary focus of private sector expansion in
July, advancing by 8,260 jobs. A gain of 1,600 jobs in trade/transportation/utilities was
also reported, raising employment in this business sector above its year ago total for the
‘First time since September 2007.
Maryland’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.1 percent in July -
more than two full percentage points below that of 9.5 percent reported nationally.
Job growth, although slowing, has proceeded without interruption over the past five months.
Since the upswing began early in 2018, Maryland’s economy has clearly nade substantial
progress, adding just over 53,000 jobs to industry payrolls since February. Growth, however,
has been uneven and we can expect, in the months ahead, to face an uphill struggle in trying
‘to regain the jobs lost during the downturn and to return to the peak employment level of
2,617,400 reached in February 2008.Original. Hessage-
