Gasket-TypeJoints
Pipeshall

cutters

specificallyforplasticpipe;
protectpipeand
fittings
from
serrated
holding
devices
and
abrasion.
1.
Wipe
thepipe
spigot,
rubber
gasket,and
insideofthesocketcleanofalldirt
and
moisture.
2.
Coat
the
socket
and
gasketevenly
with
avegetablebasepastelubricant.
3.
Slide
the
gasketonthe
spigotand
against
thebackup
ring
and
snap
itto
remove
any
twist.
4.
Force
the
spigotintothesocket.Check
that
the
joint
is
properly
connected
by
usinganythin
feeler
gaugethat
the
gasket
is
not
loopedbackoverthe
backup
ring.
SolventCementJoints
Selection.
Solventcement
shall
be
recommended
for
ABS
by
themanufacturer.
Follow
manufacturer'srecommendationsfor
types
ofsolventcement
for
such
conditions
as
temperatureover
100°F
(38°C),
orhumidity
over
60%.
Handling(tomaintaineffectiveness).
Solvent
cement
containers
nolarger
than
1
quart
(1
liter)
shouldbeusedin
the
field(toavoidthickening
due
toevaporation).Keepcontainerclosed
and
inthe
shade
when
not
in
use.Keep
applicator
submergedin
solventcementbetweenapplications.

SAFETYREQUIREMENTS
ANDPRECAUTIONS
2.7.4.1
General.
Solventscontained
in
ABS
plastic
pipe
cementsareclassified
as
airborne
contaminants
and
flammableand
combustibleliquids.
Precautions
listed
in
this
appendixshouldbe
followed
to
avoidinjurytopersonnel
and
the
hazard
offire.
2.7.4.2
SafetyPrecautions.
Prolonged
breathingofsolvent
vapors
should
be
avoided.When
pipe
and
fittingsarebeingjoined
in
partiallyenclosedareas,aventilatingdeviceshould
be
usedinsuch
a
mannerto
minimizethe
entry
of
vapors
intothebreathingareas.
2.7.4.3
Solventcementsshould
bekeptaway
from
allsources
of
ignition,
heat,sparks,and
open
flame.

Containers
for
solventcements
should
be
kept
tightlyclosedexcept
when
the
cementisbeingused.
2.7.4.5
All
rags
andothermaterialsused
for
mopping
up
spillsshould
be
kept
in
asafety
waste
receptacle
whichshould
be
emptied
daily.

Mostof
thesolvents
usedin
ABS
pipe
cementscan
be
consideredeyeirritants
and
contact
with
the
eyeshould
be
avoidedforit
may
causeeyeinjury.
Proper
eyeprotection
andtheuse
ofchemical
gogglesor
faceshieldsisadvisable
where
the
possibilityof
splashing
exists
in
handling
solvent
cements.
In
caseofeyecontact,flush
with
plenty
of
water
for15
minutes
and
callaphysicianimmediately.
2.7.4.7
Repeated
contact
with
the
skinshould
be
avoided.
Proper
gloves
impervious
to
and
unaffected
by
the
solvents
shouldbeworn
when
frequentcontact
with
theskin
is
likely.Applicationofthesolvents
or
solvent
cements
with
rags
andbare
hand
is
not
recommended.Brushes
and
other
suitable
applicatorscanbe
used
effectively
for
applyingthesolventcement,
thus
avoiding
skin
contact.
In
the
event
ofexcessive
contact,removecontaminatedclothing
andwash
skin
with
soap
and
water.

Step6Whileboththeinsidesocketsurface

are
SOFT
and
WET
with
solvent
cement,forcefullybottomthe
pipe
inthesocket,givingthepipeaonequarterturn,
if
possible.The
pipe
mustgotothebottomofthesocket.Step7
Hold
thejoint
together
until
tight
(partialset).Step8Wipeexcesscementfromthepipe.Aproperlymadejointwillnormally
show
a
beadaround
its
entire
perimeter.
Any
gaps
may
indicate
insufficient
cementorthe
use
of
light
bodied
cementon
larger
diameters
where
heavy
bodied
cementshouldhavebeenused.Step9Thesystemshall
not
betesteduntilthejointshavecured(set)atleastas
long
as
recommendedbythe
manufacturer.
SpecialJointsConnectiontoNon-PlasticPipe
Whenconnectingplasticpipetoothertypespiping,useonlyapprovedtypesoffittings
and
adapters,designed
for
the
specific
transitionintended.
