Central Ohio's Somali-American community celebrated its high school and college graduates Saturday night asa means of motivating younger Somali students and countering negative portrayals and stereotypes.The inauguralOhioSomali Graduation Ceremony is intended to continue as an annual event recognizingacademic achievement and educational excellence by shining a spotlight on stories of success and awardingscholarships."I see that as a need because there's a lot of students - either they drop out because school is hard for them,but if you stick through it you'll be successful," said Ayub Ibrahim, a recent graduate of Horizon Science  Academy in Columbus.Organizer Jibril Hirsichaired the committee that put the event together.Hirsi, who also serves asexecutive director of the Somali Community Access Network, or SomaliCAN, said the message of success is vital incentralOhio."Especially with youth. We want them to succeed with education and excel academically so they can becomeproductive citizens,"Hirsisaid.The ceremony also serves to present a positive view of the Somali community to combat labels arising fromnews coverage overseas."When you say you're fromSomaliapeople automatically say, 'Are you a pirate or something?' On television,nothing good ever comes out of Somalia,"Ibrahimsaid. "Somali students can succeed and if you want an example, here's a group of Somali students that actually graduated from high school, plan on going to collegeand do great things in life."
Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman presented a certificate of recognition for SomaliCAN for theirdedication to empowering the community. The Mayor also presented five Presidential Service Awards tofive Somali Americans who dedicated their time and energy to community service. Recepients includedAdam OHirsi, Khadra Mohamed, Asha Yusuf and Najma Nur. Each award consisted of a certificate, aletter singed by President Obama and a Presidential gold medal award.
