From the Talkoo Editors
“Good Old Times of Radio Contesting” -that’s the theme of this issue. We asked youpeople to note down old memories andstories from the time when things still madesense. We specifically asked for stories thataren’t that humble, but that perhaps highlightachievements that were omitted by the radio journals of those days. Rehabilitation – that’sround about the right word. Some of the OH-contesters that I know ha-ve gained experience in this hobby for over 50 years. In Finland “serious contesting” star-ted in the late 50s with OH1AA (m/m) andOH5NW to mention.
SAC
was also born tho-se days and we OH-contesters owe a favour to the hams that put together the SAC. Theycertainly hit the right spot. It is again time for the
SAC CW
and
SAC

SSB
contests. Theimportant dates are

.
The SSB contest has changedweekend
in order to avoid a collision with theRTTY test. The operating period is still 24hours and starts at 1200 UTC. The Danes(EDR) organize the contest this year. Pleasesee the sactest.net website for the rules.I did my first ever radio contest in 1984, andhave thus experienced the times when PCswere not that popular and the operator hadmany tasks to complete before, during, andafter the contest. Programmable el-bugs arri-ved just before the dawn of PCs and loggingsoftware. Pathetic or what, but I had a 15-mi-nute two-side tape full of “CQ Contest OH1-AD” to help survive the phone contests. Ittook me long to do real-time computer log-ging – I guess it was around 1996. Well, so-me of us even experienced the times whenel-bugs appeared, not to mention the timeswhen “everyone” had to build the rigs them-selves. I guess I’m one of those who likedham radio for the communication in it rather than the electronics and engineering. Thiswas possible because in the 1980s you couldbuy the technology and call yourself a radioham. And I think that among the hams of the1960s, 70s, and 90s there are many alike. If the internet and wireless communication hadbeen around I don’t think I would have ever bothered. To talk about “The Good Old Times” is okamongst us old farts but we must be carefulin what and how we tell about the past to thenewbies. Somehow still, I feel, as do manyothers, that ham radio as we knew it 15

50years ago, is about to turn (has evolved) intosomething different. Time will tell. Anyhow, itis entertaining to remember the old times, asmost of us have a high-pass filter in our brainthat polishes our recollections of the past. Inaddition to old stories that were kindlysubmitted by many, this issue has somepoetry, scientific content, pseudo seriousstuff, humour, and contest rules. Namely, twoweeks after the SAC SSB contest, we can alllet our hair down and work the SYLRAcontest with the Scandinavian YLs. Dr. Crof-thill’s article on pages 5

6 addresses an im-portant and painful spot, which I felt whenreading it. That is to say, where are the sun-spots and is this going to be a calm cycle? Can we deal with it knowing that many of ushave really been waiting the conditions thatwe remember from 1979, 1990, or 2000?Can we ever again work the F2-path on 50MHz to DX from Finland, or was that it?Arghh, that’s too painful to think about. Let’sfocus on the positive sides of this phenome-non...eh?The talkoo work is done and you are read-ing a double issue of PileUP!. The contribut-ions just kept coming and editors filled the journal. PileUP! was started by Harri OH6YFright after CCF was founded and continuesits journey with the talkoo editors. I hope thatyou enjoy this issue and if so, continue sup-porting PileUP! by contributing stuff.73 Ilkka OH1WZ
We organized a non-virtual editorial meeting be-fore the release of this issue. OH7WV & OH1WZat Helsinki-Vantaa airport Nine-eleven, 2010.Photo by Bei Korhonen, XYL/OH7WV. Kim, OH6-KZP was missing, but had a good excuse – hewas @ OH4A getting the station ready for theSAC.
