0-15 secs •The clip starts off with Motown music. It sounds quite jolly and romantic. It would
make the audience feel relaxed and maybe even make them want to sing along.
• At 0.01 you are able to here a male voice narrating. ‘Basic Principles. No women
wake up saying, God I hope I don’t get swept off my feet today.’
• At 0.04 there is a muffled sound of a women talking.
•At 0.11 the narrator goes on to talk again saying ‘now she might say, this is a really
bad time for me.’ In the background you are able a general street noise, like wind.
• The sound of the Motown music, and the narration is a non-diegetic sound, as it is
not coming from the world of the story. However the distant voice of the women is a
diegetic sound.
• This part of the clip starts with a ‘close up’ shot, and ends with a ‘long shot’

15-30 secs • The music in the background continues.


•At 0.18 there are birds chirping in the distant.
• The narrator carries on talking ‘ Or something like, I just need some space’ ‘ Or my
personal favourite, I’m really into my career right now.’
• At 0.28 there is the sound of keys rattling, and a locker being locked. After about a
second there are another pair of keys rattling.
• The sound of the birds chirping and the rattling of the keys are all diegetic sounds,
because they are part of the story/world. However the narration is still a non-diegetic
sound.
• This part of the clip starts and ends with a ‘close up’ shot.

30-45 secs • The music in the background is still playing.


•At 0.33 one of the characters finishes of the narrating. ‘Do you believe that, neither
does she…’ Here the character looks at the camera and talks to the audience. This
gets the audience more involved.
• We then hear a button being pressed.
• The character then goes on to say ‘you know why, because she’s lying to you, that’s
why. Do you understand me. Lying’ Here he is looking directly at the camera talking to
the audience.
• After the character says his speech, you are able to hear slight movement. A bag is
being put on the floor.
• The character starts to talk again. His voice is slightly echoed as though he is in a hall.
• All of the sounds in this scene are diegetic, as they are all part of the story.
• The part of the clip starts and ends with a ‘close up’ shot.
45-60 secs • The background music is still playing.
• The scene starts off with the male character talking. ‘She doesn't need any space’
• At 0.48 there is a sound of a lift door opening. The sound is very faint.
• The character goes on to talk to the audience. He talks to them as though they are in a
conversation. This is effective as it gets the viewer focused, and makes them feel like
there are part of the story in the movie.
• Most of the sound in this scene is just of the character talking and the music in the
background.
• The sounds excluding the background music are diegetic, as they are part of the world
of the story.
• This part of the clip starts with a ‘long shot’ and ends in a ‘close up’ shot.

60-1:15 • The music in the background continues.


min • At the beginning of a scene there is a sound of a small dog bark.
• The narration is continued of that left off from the character.
• The sounds in this scene are all diegetic apart from the music in the background.
• This part of the clip starts and ends with a ‘close up’ shot.

1:15-1:30 • The background music carries on playing softly.


min • At 1:16 we here the sound of a lift about to close. With a little ‘ting’ noise. There is also
a muffled dog noise. There is also the sound of the lift door closing.
• At 1:18 we hear a female voice shouting, ‘Toby! Toby!’ The second time round she
sounds more urgent.
• There is then a sound of a dog barking.
• At 1:22, you are able to hear a female voice mutter something under her voice and a
slight rattle of keys again.
• At 1:24 the male character starts to speak again. ‘Of course she’s going to lie to you,
she’s a nice person. She doesn’t want to hurt your feelings.’
• The sounds are all diegetic.
1:30-1:45 • The same music plays in the background.
min • The character seems to be moving, as the sound of the environment has changed.
• In the background there is a muffled sound of cars passing by.
• The narrator continues to speak.
• At 1:37 the cars passing by becomes a bit more clearer and intense.
• The sounds in this part of the clip are all diegetic, as they are all involved in the story.

1:45-1:55 • The music continues to play in the background.


min •In the distance there are the sound of footsteps approaching and a character shouting
‘Toby!’ There are also keys rattling again. At 1:48 a female voice says ‘Oh my god!’ The
footsteps stop. Just after she says this, the background music also stops.
• At 1:49 there is a sound of a car horn peeping. The women says ‘Oh! Oh! Oh!’ We just
about here the man beginning to talk.
• All the sounds in this clip are diegetic as they are all coming from the world of the story.
