Blood Sweat
By Julian Ravage
Linda stared at the silver metal tray and held back tears. The kitchen wasfilled with bright sunlight. Birds chirping in the distance could not break her attention on this beautiful morning. She had to be calm and focused. The metal tray held a glass of orange juice, a white bowl of soup, one silver spoon, a pair of handcuffs and one folded white towel. Linda caught herself bitingher lip and quickly sighed. Eric always liked soup. For such an amazing man, hehad simple tastes.Linda could feel the weight of the tray as she lifted it up. She flowed throughthe empty hallways to a large bedroom. At the doorway she stood for a momentand simply watched. The room was bare except for a bed with a metal frame, awooden chair and a small wooden table. The walls were white and were brighter from the incoming sunlight. Several naked windows broke up the plain room withviews of the yard. Eric lay in bed, sleeping.Linda took one step in and Eric¶s eyes opened. She smiled as she put the traydown on the wooden table. Eric watched her with loving if not hollow eyes. Hisskin was a tint of gray and he was very thin.³How are you my love?´ Linda said cheerfully as she sat down in the emptychair.³Tired.´ Eric sat up a little.Linda put the spoon in the bowl and handed it to Eric. He took it with asmile.³You know how much I love chicken soup. I am going to miss this.´

³You should stop talking like that. Just enjoy it.´Eric took the spoon and hungrily started to scoop up soup. Linda watchedand could not help but feel her eyes water. For a long moment, they did not talk.Eric continued until the bowl was empty.³I guess it¶s true, your last meal is the best.´ Eric wiped at his mouth.Linda was about to speak but Eric stopped her. ³I know. I know. I shouldn¶t be all gloom and doom. I was never the most positive person, its hard trying to begood at a time like this.´³Do you remember our first date?´³The night of the rain storm, yea, running through all that rain just to get tothe restaurant with only one umbrella. We were soaked from the legs down. Youheld onto me so fiercely.´³I knew I just wanted to be with you. I knew it when we first met.´ Lindacouldn¶t hold back a tear.Eric reached forward and hugged Linda. Their embrace felt like it would lastforever. She did not want to let go. She held onto him as fiercely as that night inthe rain. Eric pulled away, taking the handcuffs with him. With two quick actions,he snapped the cuffs on his wrist and to the metal bed frame.³This is day six. There won¶t be much time.´³Some people manage to fight it off. Maybe you will be one of them.´Eric looked down. ³I can feel them in my body.´Linda just stared with wet eyes. ³We should have gone to one of the militaryshelters.´³They would have done nothing but execute me.´³I love you.´ Linda whispered.³I love you.´ Eric whispered back.

A moment of silence fell over them and then Eric started to convulse. Lindareached for the white towel. Eric¶s body began to thrash. The handcuffs sparked asit screeched up and down on the metal frame. Linda backed away as she wipedaway her tears. Eric¶s skin took on a tint of red and then streaks of blood started tocover his body. He growled and screamed. The bed looked like it was going to flyapart. From the folded towel, Linda pulled a handgun. She pointed the 357magnum at Eric¶s bloody body. Eric stopped trashing and stared at Linda withhungry red eyes. He growled low and lunged at her. The handcuffs held onto hisarm and he came crashing down on the wooden floor. He growled louder as hecrawled, dragging the heavy metal bed behind him.Linda aimed. Her hand shook a little as she tightened her finger on thetrigger. Eric slowly dragged the bed as blood from his skin streaked the floor. Thegun went off. Eric gave an inhuman scream as the bullet grazed the side of hishead. Linda aimed again.³I love you.´ was all Linda could say as she pulled the trigger. The second bullet struck Eric in the forehead and blasted out the back of hisskull. His body went limp on the blood slicked floor. Linda tried to stop herself from shaking. She backed slowly out of the room when Eric¶s corpse began toshake and move. Linda had seen the news reports of the worms and even somefootage but it still horrified her. In the puddle of blood around Eric, there wasmovement. Little worms squirmed and rose up. Some spilled out of the open headwound and crawled in every direction. They still controlled the body even withoutthe brain. Eric¶s hands still grouped outward to grab anything. His feet kicked in arhythmic motion to get the body moving forward.Linda ran. She made her way into the living room. Several canisters of gasoline stood in the middle of the room. She opened the caps and kicked themover. Her hand wrapped around the flare gun on the stand. She bolted out into theyard. With one quick turn, she aimed and fired. The flare burst from the gun andflew into the white house. A flash and roar of flame took hold. After severalminutes, the living room began to burn and soon after, the entire home.
