Queens University of Charlotte will host its annual kick off to the men’s and women’s
basketball season, Ballin’ on Burwell, on October 22nd. The outputs we expect are, to
reach the media, which will, in turn create more coverage of the event that will increase
attendance. Outcomes that we anticipate are a spike in attendance at basketball games
during season, and the relationships between basketball players and fans growing.
In order to assess the quality of the event and the outcomes, I will use a survey
questionnaire. To choose the people who will be taking the questionnaire I will be using
non-random selection. At basketball games (around the middle of the season) I will have
these questionnaires at the SMA (Sports Marketing Association) table. When royals pride
students come to the table for information and scan into games, I will ask them to fill it
out before they enter. I will also use an unobtrusive method which will be to keep the
clippings of the media coverage that the press release receives throughout the area. I will
also complete case study research on how other universities handle media coverage of
on-campus events.
In the survey, I will assess the outcomes of the event. I want to know if students were
encouraged to go to basketball games because of Ballin’ on Burwell. I also want to know
if they regularly go to games after attending. If they are a returner and attended Ballin’ on
Burwell, I will find out if they go to more games this year than last year. I will also asses
the atmosphere and behaviors at games by asking how much fun they have. If they have
fun at games, there is probably a good atmosphere. Lastly I will assess the relationships
that were gained at Ballin’ on Burwell between the players and students. This information
would be assessed and the results would be compiled as a whole in order to see which
areas need to be worked on the most for next year.
The first unobtrusive method I will use, of collecting news clippings, will be stored in a
computer. These press clippings will keep the facts of what coverage the release gained
and what these articles may have done to help or hurt the event. They will give me an
idea of what outlets to use next year and what outlets I should not use – probably those
that covered it in a negative way.
The second unobtrusive method is a case study of other universities. I will use nearby
universities like Belmont Abbey and UNCC to do research on, because they will most
likely use the same media outlets Queens does. Also, they have websites and their
distance away from Queens allows for easy contact. The options other schools use will be
looked over and assessed to see if they are more or less successful than Queens’ media
coverage. If they are, next year, other methods will be used in order to get the word out.
By the time the basketball season is past their half way point in the season, I will begin
the research and by the end of the season I will have a clearer understanding of how
Ballin’ on Burwell impacted the season and how much media coverage the press releases
also got. This event is meant to have a positive affect on the men’s and women’s
basketball season. The press release is also supposed to cover as much ground as possible
and this research will help to make sure these measures worked.
