cultures, be attentive to social behaviour, speech etiquette.

Procedure
I. Introduction
II. Warming-up
(Fable “How Different the Cultures Are” aimed at defining the topic of the lesson.)
How Different the Cultures Are
Imagine, if you will, that in your own country, from the time of the first people,
today, and far into the future, everyone who was ever born, has been born with two legs,
two arms, two eyes, a nose, a mouth and a pair of sunglasses. The colour of the lenses in
the sunglasses is yellow. No one has ever thought it strange that the sunglasses are there
because they’ve always been there and they are a part of the human body. Everyone has
them.
Take the yellow sunglasses off and look at them. What make them yellow are the
values, attitudes, ideas, beliefs that all people in your country have in common. Everything
that they have seen, learnt, or will experience (past, present, and the future) has been
imprinted on their brains through the yellow lenses. Everything has been filtered and
interpreted through all these values and ideas that have made the lenses yellow.
Thousand of miles away in another country, from the time of the first people, today,
and far into the future, everyone who was ever born or will be born, has been born with
two legs, two arms, two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and a pair of sunglasses. The colour of the
lenses in their sunglasses is blue. No one has ever thought it strange that the sunglasses are
there because they’ve always been there and they’ve become a part of the human body.
Everyone has them. Everything that the people see, learn, and experience is filtered
through their blue lenses.

2
A traveler who wants to go to that faraway land may have enough sense to realize
that to learn about the country and the people more thoroughly, he will have to acquire
some blue sunglasses so that he can “see”. When the traveler arrives in the country where
people wear blue glasses, he acquired a pair for himself. He stays for two months. He feels
that he really is learning about the values, attitudes, and beliefs of the people. He comes
home to his own country and declares that he is now an “expert” on that country and that
the culture is green!
T: Why did the traveler see green?

T: And now I suggest your answering my questions about the New Year’s
traditions. You have 20 seconds to think it over. If you are ready then the captains raise
their hands. You have only one possibility to give the answer, and only the captains have a
right to answer.
- Why do Scottish people go to their friends on New Year’s Eve bringing
a piece of pie, a glass of wine and a piece of coal? (They symbolize food, drinks and
warmth in New Year)
- Why do Swedish men usually carry out garbage bins before New Year
comes? ( In case men have children, they carry out the garbage so that to come back
home in the clothes of Jule Jomtes (Swedish Father frost) and give presents to everybody)
- Why don’t Italian people walk along the streets at the end of the year?
(Because there is a tradition to throw old and unnecessary furniture and other things out
of the windows)
- Why do Japanese people go to bed as soon as the last of 108 bells that
symbolize people’s bad passions is gone? (They believe that this night their dreams can
have a great meaning for their future life)
- Spanish people adore garlic soup – la sopa de ajo. Why don’t they eat it
on New Year’s Eve? (Because they fear that garlic smell will scare the coming year)
- Why do German people of all years jump on the chairs, tables,
armchairs before the clock strikes 12? (As soon as the clock strikes 12 they all jump off the
furniture into the new year)
- Why do people in Belgium feed their animals with their favourite dishes
and decorate them with bright ribbons? (They have a tradition to congratulate animals on
the holiday and by these actions they want their animals to have many children in the
following year)
- Why don’t Hungarian people eat poultry (домашня птиця) on this day?
(They think that otherwise their happiness would fly away)
- What do Greek people say when they present their friends with heavy
stones? (“May your money be as heavy as this stone”)

8
- Why does Father Frost in Brazil wear a hat and pants/underwear?
(Because the holiday here coincides with the summer time, thus he comes to people
directly to the beaches)
- Why don’t Bulgarian people have light for three minutes before the
first of January comes? (This is their “Rising time”)
- Why do Chinese people close windows & doors with red ribbons?
(They believe that the holiday is accompanied by the evil ghosts and thus they prevent
their homes from their invasion)

T: How to adapt to a new culture? The ability to speak fluently in different

languages provides us with personal freedom that no other means can provide. What
advice would you give to people who are going to visit or stay in some country abroad?
Students’ answers:
- Try to understand people of another culture.
- Be attentive towards what is going around you & why.
- Don’t think of your cultures habits as “right” and other people’s as
“wrong”.
- Be willing to try new things and have new experiences.
- Try to appreciate and understand other people’s values.
- Think about your own culture, how it influences your attitude and
actions.
- Don’t show your negative attitude to foreigners and their culture.
T: Show interest, respect for things that are important to other people. It can help
you avoid misunderstanding, develop friendship more easily and feel more comfortable
when traveling or living abroad. Remember that cultures are different but defective.
