Acting Lesson for Teachers: Using PerformanceSkills in the Classroom.
Praeger Publishing
 Course Design:
This course is designed to provide teacher trainees with a 14-week and 3-hour course onacting. Developing main acting skills enables teacher trainees to use their body language andvoice more effectively and to construct their professional identities in a context in which thisidentity is analyzed and rehearsed as a role. The major components of the course are: effectivecommunication skills (body language, use of voice and nonverbal communication), sensoryawareness which is necessary for managing nonverbal communication and performing thetarget professional identity, emotional preparation necessary for realizing an effective teacher identity, nonverbal immediacy and finally a rehearsal process of your teacher identity by blending these abovementioned all. These objectives will be fulfilled by practicing someactor-preparation activities, learning some major acting techniques and some variousrehearsals on the teacher that you are aspired to become. In addition to that, teacher traineesare encouraged to develop drama activities for teaching purposes.
Assignments:
The participants need to do some readings weekly to be discussed, prepare some acting tasksindividually or in pairs/groups and design and prepare some lesson plans and demonstrations.24 different activities and tasks will be covered during the course. While 20 of these activitiesaim at practicing acting skills and techniques, the remainder 4 are basically rehearsals whichwill be performed after acting practices are completed. Each trainee has to take an active part

in these activities both in and outside the classroom and each are required to keep a portfolioduring the course.
Assessment:
Each trainee keeps a portfolio in which a session journal, all writing tasks, peer and trainer feedbacks, and lesson plans are presented. As this course does not offer a final exam, macroteaching demonstrations and portfolio will be the main criteria for the successful completion.
Mid-term Test
The mid-term will be approximately 45 minutes in length and will cover concepts andterminology from the book and class discussions. It will entail both multiple-choice and open-ended questions.
Attendance and Participation

All students are expected to attend each class, arrive and depart on time, and be prepared to participate actively (Active listening, asking questions, making remarks, etc.).Students will be allowed 8 hours of absence without the need to provide a reason. Excuses for absences (health problems, family problems, etc) will be allowed but must be made up for byout-of-class time with the instructor. After 8 hours of absences, students will fail the class.
Acting Themes and Skills with the Activity Numbers:
The table below shows the content and purpose of the activities. One activity may serve morethan one theme and skill. First four steps should be completed before the activities of therehearsals on teacher identity are performed. The first four themes and skills will be integratedduring the course.
