Approach of Night
A ghostly membrane of light floats just above the nightShifting in and out of the grass, the trees, the corner Shed another thing altogether, that blackness hulkingIn the folds between the moving shadowsRepelling the light and vision...who goes there? The change from twilight to night breaksOur tensile strength of resolve and clarityStretching us thin and inviting the imagined onslaughtOf easy fears and superstitions in runaway minds.Out here, in the gloaming air, looking back at surburbia, atPeople in their closed houses, throwing their reclusion aroundLike so many flimsy excuses to be apart, alone, or otherwise Not involved and secluded: “Do Not Disturb”May as well be hung from their door handles.Against the houses we see moonlight from behind aFragile break in the formal china clouds, and againShining a spotlight on the urban fencingThe brightness of the suspended timeAn accusation on our fast-paced lifeAnd our aversion to our origins. In feral song of moon-mad dance, leaf and bladeSweep the night-air down and pause the moon inStillborn power to raise our past and remind usOf our hopes, fears, and frailties, as well as possibilities.Raised howls from tied-up neighborhood dogs stir the curtains withMovements of ghostly transgressions, but no one’s there. Not when the homeowner gets up to check the sudden draftThat nibbles at the mind with “yeah, its nothing, but I should check.”
