Nordicom is an organ of co-operation between the Nordiccountries  Denmark, Finland, Ice-land, Norway and Sweden. The over-riding goal and purpose is to makethe media and communication effortsundertaken in the Nordic countriesknown, both throughout and farbeyond our part of the world.Nordicom

uses a variety of chan-nels  newsletters, journals, books, databases  to reach researchers, students, decision-makers, mediapractitioners, journalists, teachersand interested members of the ge-neral public.Nordicom

works to establishand strengthen links between theNordic research community andcolleagues in all parts of the world, both by means of unilateral flowsand by linking individualresearchers, research groups andinstitutions.Nordicom also documentsmedia trends in the Nordiccountries. The joint Nordicinformation addresses users inEurope and further afield. Theproduc-tion of comparative mediastatistics forms the core of thisservice.Nordicom is funded by theNordic Council of Ministers.
In 1997, The Nordic Information Centre for Media andCommunication Research (Nordicom), GöteborgUniversity Sweden, began establishment of TheUNESCO International Clearinghouse on Children,Youth and Media (formerly The UNESCO InternationalClearinghouse on Children and Violence on theScreen), financed by the Swedish government andUNESCO. The overall point of departure for theClearinghouses efforts with respect to children, youthand media is the UN Convention on the Rights of theChild. The aim of the Clearinghouse is to increaseawareness and knowledge about children, youth andmedia, thereby providing a basis for relevant policy-making, contributing to a constructive public debate, and enhancing childrens and young peoples medialiteracy and media competence. Moreover, it is hopedthat the Clearinghouses work will stimulate furtherresearch on children, youth and media. The International Clearinghouse on Children, Youthand Media informs various groups of users researchers, policy-makers, media professionals, voluntary organisations, teachers, students andinterested individuals  aboutresearch on children, young people andmedia, with special attention to mediaviolenceresearch and practices regarding mediaeducation and childrens/young peoplesparticipation in the mediameasures, activities and researchconcerning childrens and young peoplesmedia environment.Fundamental to the work of the Clearinghouse is thecreation of a global
network.
The Clearinghousepublishes a
yearbook
and a
newsletter.
Several
bibliographies
and a worldwide
register of organisations
concerned with children and media havebeen compiled. This and other information is availableon the Clearinghouses
