INTRODUCTION
Clean coal Technology is the
process in which, coal is partially
combusted with oxygen and steam to
form what is commonly called syngas.
The syngas then is cleaned to
remove particulates and other
emissions.
NECESSITY:
 Major portion of energy obtained through fossil
fuels.
 Coal provides a dominant portion of the electrical
energy production.
 39% of electricity is generated from coal.
 The IEA expects a 43% increase in its use from
2000 to 2020.
 25 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions are produced
from burning of coal.
COAL
PREPARATION:

COAL WASHING THROUGH GRAVITY SEPARATION

INTEGRATED GASIFICATION COMBINED CYCLE
SYNTHETIC GAS (SYN GAS):
 Syngas is a mixture of Co, Co2,H2,So2 ,Nox
 Syngas is a combustible and often used as a fuel source.
 It is produced by water shift reactions. The reactions
are :
 2C+O2 => 2CO
 C+H2O=> CO + H2
 CO+H2O=>CO2 + H2
 The products are then concentrated CO2 can be captured
and hydrogen which is the final fuel.
REMOVAL OF POLLUTANTS:
Removal of Nitrogen oxide

 Nitrogen oxide reduction methods include the use of

low NOx burners.
 Low Nitrogen Oxide (LNB) burners provides a
stable flame that has different zones.
 The first zone is primary combustion, the second
zone is reburning, the third zone is final combustion
in less air to limit the temperature.
Removal of Particulates emissions
Carbon capture
STORAGE AND SEQUESTRATION OF CO2

1. CO2 pumped into disused coal fields displaces methane which can be used as fuel
2. CO2 can be pumped into and stored safely in saline aquifers
3. CO2 pumped into oil fields helps maintain pressure, making extraction easier
UTILIZATION OF ASH
 In Cement production.

 Manufacturing bricks.

 Artificial light weight aggregate material.

 Soil conditioner.
Artificial light weight aggregate material
Soil conditioner
Advantages
 Low emmissions can be obtained.

 High thermal efficiency (upto 60%)

 Pollutants can be removed efficiently

 Results in less solid waste

 1/3 less water is required

Disadvantages
 Requires more plant area

 Costly process

 Removal & storing of Co2 is complicated

Conclusion

By adopting this technology, thermal

efficiency of the Power Plant is increased and
pollution is less. Amount of coal used is less.
