Consider one of the following topics:

1. According to Coakley, one consequence of the process of creating and using racial ideology is that
certain sports are identified as black sports and white sports. Discuss three examples from the
film.
2. To what extent do the black male athletes support or undermine the sociological hypothesis used
to explain the achievements of black male athletes on page 287?
3. How are women portrayed in the film, especially with respect to their relationship to male
athletes? Discuss three examples.
4. Sports can divide or unify people. Discuss three examples of sports as either a dividing or
unifying force.

Interview two people from different racial, ethnic, religious, social class, or gender groups. Select two
spectators or two participants.

1. Consider the following set of questions to ask each person you have identified using a written survey or
personal interview.

1. What is your favorite sport?


2. What is your favorite sports team? Why?
3. Name the three greatest athletes of all time? Why?
4. How would you describe the treatment of minority groups in America today compared to fifty years
ago?
5. Is their evidence that discrimination still exists? Explain.
6. Is their evidence of discrimination in the world of sports? Explain.
7. Are minority athletes including women, treated differently by owners, managers, coaches, the media,
players, or fans? Explain.
8. How important are sports to others within your group? How can you tell?
9. What changes do you foresee in the world of American sports?
10. What is your age?
11. What is your gender?
12. What is your race?
13. What is your ethnicity?

2. Next, analyze the answers to your questions by looking for the similarities and the differences between the
individuals that you have surveyed.
3. Finally, write a report summarizing the similarities and differences between the people you interviewed.
4. Present your findings to the class.
5. Your presentation must be at least 7 minutes, but no more than 10 minutes.
6. You need to have at least one visual.
