Foreword:
Welcome to Digital Communication --
Learn how to speak and write correctly
with positive purpose, power and prosperity
By Dr. Vi
Internet and mobile technologies have changed how we communicate locally and globally. In the physical world, we communicate through machines, such as: computers, laptops, mobile phones, and tablets. In the digital world, we communicate through web interfaces, such as: emails, websites, chat rooms and social networks. Business communication has evolved from the traditional pen and paper
to digital gadgets
. Sometimes, we seem to communicate faster, not necessarily better, with more tweets, gossip, rumors, bullies and scandals than a century ago. When we learn how to speak and write correctly, we can create positive affinity with others in the digital world.
As we speak, many of us enjoy the freedom of speech on the Internet. Anyone can upload a video on YouTube, initiate a conversation on Facebook, or send out a tweet on Twitter. Your spoken words are recorded and shared, travelling rapidly on the Internet. Suddenly, your spoken words have gone viral
-- message is distributed at an exponential rate. Quantity overwhelms quality in the digital age. Sometimes, one may say outrageous things just to get fan base or instant fame online. Sometimes, one may communicate personal opinion without facts, simply to make a statement and get attention. Cross-cultural conflicts often start from unfiltered speech that leads to emotional turmoil and unwanted consequences. Therefore, freedom of speech does not mean irresponsible or careless speech. We need to take responsibility for what we say and how we speak our mind every day.
As we write, we rely on web or phone applications (also called apps
) to type email messages, correct spelling errors, and search proper keywords. Sometimes, we express ideas without any filter for proper social etiquette and correct cultural implication. Sometimes, we write to express a quick anger when we feel frustrated, confused or helpless. Cross-cultural misunderstanding often starts with some bad word choices or simple grammar mistakes. For example, an incomplete sentence, with an incomplete thought, is often caused by a missing noun, verb or punctuation. Many of these situations can easily be avoided when we learn to think and write consciously
with mutual respect and cultural understanding.
For those of us who pray for peace and harmony, we shall practice good speaking and writing daily to minimize cross-cultural conflict and misunderstanding.
Would you like to learn how to speak with purpose and write with power?
The best way to learn the art of English speaking and writing is to study one of the classics in English Language -- How to Speak and Write Correctly
by Joesph Devin (1910). Although his book was first published more than 100 years ago, many of his English speaking and writing principles are still relevant today. His speaking and writing suggestions help us to communicate effectively, not only in English, but also in languages from different cultural backgrounds. When you care about how you speak and write, you project a positive image and powerful influence among friends. Imagine...
When you are in a sales presentation, a marketing seminar, or a business conference, you speak confidently to capture your audience's interest. You speak persuasively to earn trust and build relationship. Every word that you use in a speech or a conversation represents who you are (your character) and what you are (your core value). You speak with conviction and belief to guide your audience through a journey with a purposeful ending.
When you need to send out an email message, a sales letter, or any marketing copy, you write clearly and concisely to have call-to-actions. You get your clients to schedule an appointment, place an order or make a repeat purchase. Your copy is like the guiding star
on a map, taking your readers from A to B. Whatever the purpose your copy serves, you create positive power from words and phrases to emotions and actions.
When you master your English speaking and writing, you will avoid cross-cultural misunderstanding and embarrassing moments. More importantly, you will gain new confidence in English speaking and writing. Meet new friends with shared value and interest. Invite new customers to buy your products. Attract qualified investors to fund your new projects. Engage online users to become your loyal followers. Opportunities are endless.
Therefore, you have to learn how to speak and write English (or any language) correctly with love and respect. With good intention in speaking and writing, you attract abundant opportunities to learn and grow. You will advance in your career. You will grow your business in profitable ways. You will discover the true power of human interaction. You will understand the true value of effective communication. When you speak with purpose and write with power, you are making a positive influence. More importantly, you are creating new prosperity for yourself and others in this world.
About the Author
Joseph Devlin, also known as Joe Devlin (February 13, 1871 to January 18, 1934) was an Irish journalist and an influential nationalist politician. He was born in the Lower Falls area of Belfast -- the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. Devlin was the fifth child in the family. Even though he received only a primary school education, he continued to learn read and write independently.
By age 15, Devlin showed an early gift for public speaking and became the chairman of the Sexton Debating Society. His debate experience exposed him to Irish politics and made him an advocate for Nationalism. He became a journalist on the Irish News and Freeman's Journal with his name Joe Devlin
(1891 to 1893). He actively promoted social reform and exposed the terrible working conditions for some local mill workers.
From 1890 till his death, Devlin was a skilled politician and a member of parliament (MP) for the Irish Parliamentary Party in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. And later, he was a Nationalist Party MP in the Parliament of Northern Ireland.
His nickname Wee Joe
came from his charming personality as a fluent and powerful orator. His approach to life was getting things done
. His top-notch public oratory had earned him another nickname Pocket Demosthenes
-- meaning that Devlin always had powerful political speeches to debate and fight against the other party.
He was never married. He lived mostly in Belfast and sometimes in London. He passed away in 1934. According to the New York Times, Lord Craigavon, the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, said: [Joe] and I were in opposite political camps for over thirty years. . . [but throughout I only have respect and] admiration for his personal character.
Devlin was remembered as a strong supporter for school and children, an eloquent advocate for social reform, and a distinguished leader for Ireland's political history.

It is very easy to learn how to speak and write correctly, as for all purposes of ordinary conversation and communication; only about 2,000 different words are required. The mastery of just twenty hundred words, the knowing where to place them, will make us not masters of the
