GUIDE TO APPLICANTS/CONDITIONS OF AWARD 
Closing Date for full applications: Friday 19 November 2010 Introduction and purpose 
Cancer Council Western Australia aims to minimise the effect of cancer on our communitythrough research and education and by providing people affected by cancer with supportto enhance their quality of life. A key objective of the Cancer Council is to encourage andsupport a wide range of research activities into the causes, diagnosis, treatment andprevention of cancer and leukaemia.Cancer Council Western Australia PhD Top Up Scholarships are offered to students withan outstanding track record in academic achievement and research potential to pursuefull-time PhD studies in Western Australia in cancer-related research. Research projectscan be in the fields of laboratory, clinical, epidemiological, psychosocial and/orbehavioural science.In 2011 a maximum of two PhD Top Up scholarships will be awarded to highly rankedPhD students awarded an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent. Totalvalue of the PhD Top Up scholarship will be up to $36,000 (tax exempt) for 3 years full-time, with a maximum payable rate of $12,000 per annum.Applications for Cancer Council Western Australia research funding should be madethrough eligible institutions which are registered as Administering Institutions.Applicants should contact the Research Administration Officer of their Institution forfurther advice regarding the closing date, institutional approvals and processes.

Eligibility Criteria
The following students are eligible to apply: 
1.
 
Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia.2.
 
Applications must be received within 12 months of the initial enrolment as a PhDstudent3.
 
Applicants must have:a.
 
completed requirements for the award of an appropriate degree with aminimum of upper second-class Honoursorb.
 
a Medical Degree.4.
 
Applicants must be enrolled, or be eligible to enroll as a full-time student in anapproved post bachelor course at an eligible institution.5.
 
Applicants must have applied for a three year competitive postgraduatescholarship, such as an APA.
a.
 
receipt of this Scholarship is contingent upon the receipt of an APAor equivalent award
The following students are ineligible to apply: 
 1.
 
Students who are current recipients of a top-up scholarships in conjunction withan APA award or equivalent.
Application Eligibility Criteria
A transcript of the student’s academic history must accompany the application. Thistranscript must be complete, including all enrolment years, all units the student has beenenrolled in, enrolment status for each year (full-time/part-time), all marks/grades, and thecourse weighted average mark attained.
Applications will be ruled ineligible if: 
1.
 
an academic transcript is not included with the application2.
 
an academic transcript is not complete3.
 
the application is received after the closing date4.
 
the application has not been approved by the Head of Department
The Tobacco Industry 
Cancer Council will not provide research funding to any researcher who:1.
 
is an applicant for or is in receipt of funds from the tobacco industry, ororganisations deemed by the Cancer Council to be associated with the tobaccoindustry, regardless of whether the funds are received directly, throughcollaborators or by other means (the Smoking and Health Research Foundation ofAustralia is deemed to be associated with the tobacco industry);

is employed in a research institute or organisation or, in the case of universities,Faculty or School that allows applications or receives funds from the tobaccoindustry, whatever the use of those funds may be; or3.
 
is employed in a University that accepts funds from the tobacco industry forhealth related research or services, wherever in the University that research maybe done or those services supported.
Project Eligibility Criteria
1.
 
The research project proposed by the applicant must be relevant to a career inresearch2.
 
The research project proposed by the applicant must broadly relate to cancerresearch3.
 
It is essential that the applicant have appropriate supervision throughout theduration of the proposed project and that they make all necessary arrangementsfor acceptance and supervision with the Head of Department or supervisorconcerned and secure their endorsement in the space provided on the form.
Obligations of the Scholarship Recipient
4.
 
The annual PhD Top Up salary is $10,000pa plus $2,000pa for travel funds toattend conferences or other relevant PhD costs.5.
 
The Scholarship will be awarded for 1 year in the first instance and may berenewed annually (for up to three years in total) subject to the recipientperforming satisfactorily in their research and remaining enrolled for the PhDdegree.6.
 
Confirmation from your supervisor (either via letter or email) signifying thatsatisfactory progress is being made on the PhD project is required in the following January of each year of the scholarship.7.
 
A final report from the scholarship holder is to be submitted within 12 months ofthe conclusion of the three year period8.
 
CCWA must be notified immediately of any changes to the Award at which timethe Scholarship will be reviewed by the Research Committee. Changes include,but not exclusively:a.
 
when the award holder ceases to be a full-time studentb.
 
suspension of the awardc.
 
conversion of degreesd.
 
paid employmente.
 
institution transferf.
 
delays with the commencement of research
NB: Special arrangements for payment during tenure will be considered by the Cancer Council uponrequest.
