The Open Planets Foundaon (OPF) was founded in March 2010to provide praccal tools, soluons and experse in digitalpreservaon, assuring long-term access to digital content. Itbuilds upon the €15 million investment made by the EuropeanUnion and the Planets consorum which brought togethersixteen major research and naonal libraries, naonal archives,leading technology companies, and research universies.
The OPF believes that developing and sustaining digitalpreservaon pracce requires an open community that acvelyshares best pracce and is able to apply group learning.OPF founders foresee that making tools available under an opensource licence where and when possible will smulate theadopon of the digital preservaon pracce.OPF foresees that hundreds of organisaons will make use of praccal digital preservaon soluons.

The OPF will play a central role in gathering and managing therequirements of its members and the wider digital preservaoncommunity. It will deﬁne products and soluons that can bedeployed by third pares into scalable and sustainable services.It will engage the research community to carry out research anddevelopment and to design new experiments. OPF will also beinvolved in externally funded research and developmentprojects where its main focus will be to ensure that newtechnologies meet stakeholders’ requirements and can be takeninto pracce.
