There is a very old saying that all cats look grey at night. Today, thanks partly tothe growing trend to urnish private homes and gardens with sophisticated outdoorlighting, that saying is no longer as true as it once was.Facades subtly accentuated by light and encircled by greenery imbue such build-ings with an inviting, homely atmosphere. Illuminated gardens extend the domesticliving space outwards, illuminated boundaries enable the space to be experiencedas a whole, even in winter. The result is a sense o security, orientation and comort– enhanced by the light that shines through the windows, through the eyes, as itwere, o the building.Ensuring the right results calls or proessional lighting planning conducted in closecooperation between client, architect, interior designer, landscape designer andlighting designer. Part o the challenge lies in crating a solution that achieves har-mony and balance while successully underlining the design statement o acadesand accentuating the design o the exterior acilities. The most important thing toconsider at all times, however, is the personal space o those who live in the build-ing. Tailoring the colours, contours and materials o the architecture to personalliestyle is crucially important or the wellbeing o those occupying the space. So,too, is the task o dening and meeting the lighting requirements presented.Especially where the client wishes to t outdoor lighting with more conventional, more energy-intensive lamps – which may seem a more economical option at rstbecause o the lower initial outlay – thought should at least be given to harness-ing the extensive possibilities o modern building services technology. Ecientautomation o electrical installations is a vital requirement or resource conservationand sustainability; so is the use o lamps that use less energy to deliver the sameamount o light.Hence the increasing use o LEDs in outdoor lighting. Appealingly petite, they canoten be concealed behind protrusions or embedded in building joints. This coin-cides with the current zen-inspired preerence or minimalist design, allowing lumi-naires to become physically discreet space-dening elements. On the other hand, light used to create an eye-catching, space-dominating eature, e.g. a designerlight sculpture, is ound to enhance, enliven and add interest to the surroundings.May this booklet be a source o inspiration and ideas or your personal wellbeing.Andrea NusserPLDA Lighting Designer
