ometimes it pays to be thenew kid on the block. Youthful Redmond, only100 years old in 2010, was thelast of Central Oregon’s majorcommunities to incorporate. Aftermore than a decade of meteoricgrowth, we’ve settled into ahealthy gradual upward trendin population increases and areenjoying being the hub city of theregion.Redmond is the geographicheart of Central Oregon, nearlyequidistant from the OchocoMountains and PrinevilleReservoir, prime fly-fishing spotson the Metolius River, the dramaticlava fields south of Bend, and thehot springs at the Warm SpringsIndian Reservation.Early settlers in Redmond wereattracted by the area’s climate andpotential; the coming of irrigationcanals and the railroad caused aflood of newcomers soon after theturn of the 20th century. We began as an agriculturalcommunity, centered aroundfarming, ranching and naturalresource industries such as lumbermills. We’ve grown to include afirst-class airport and expo center, light industrial and manufacturing facilities and technology-basedbusinesses.Redmond is a community that is constantly reinventing itself, striving to remain true to its roots while being open to change andreinvigoration.
