ARTS

Often, in life, things don't just happen. YOU'll normally find that behind every success story there has been a lot of hard work, effort and determination - add headaches to this list, and you've got the mix for the Norden Farm recipe!!!

The story began in 1976 with the formation of Maidenhead Arts and their desire to build an arts centre in Maidenhead. Over the subsequent years many locations and buildings were carefully evaluated, but finding the right site at the right price was a major problem. Fifteen years later. there seemed to be an opportunity to develop the Norden Farm site, although I have to admit that since being Chairman of the Norden Farm Trust from its inception in 1991, there have been several times when I have felt that the odds seemed so heavily stacked against us that the project could falter.

But it didn't and this is due to many different factors. I would like to sincerely thank not only my fellow Trustees and the Centre Director, David Hill, for their great teamwork, support and individual skills, but all those people and companies who, over the last few years, have understood and appreciated the "vision" and consequently given their time and money.

And of course, we would not have had a Centre of this quality and refinement had it not been for the tremendous faith and backing of the Arts Council with their £7 million grant from the Lottery, and the outstanding support and encouragement of both Southern Arts and the Royal Borough.

Now that Norden Farm Centre for the Arts has finally opened, I am sure that the residents of the Royal Borough will appreciate what a real "gem" we have created and understand how the Centre will increasingly benefit the whole community.

ARTS

For nearly twenty five years people in Maidenhead

have sought to establish a quality arts venue for a town that supports over fifty local performing and visual arts organisations. Maidenheaa Arts was established in 1978 with the objective to create a Centre for the Arts.

In the early 1990's, building and land at Norden Farm were purchased and an inde~lTldent trust, (Chaired by Councillor Phillip Love) was established. A successful fundraising campaign allowed the Trust

to restore the.eX€i:,ptlional 18th climbury Long Barn at the front of tile site.

David Hill was eppoisted as Oirec~or lrtjanqary

11996 and a feasibility r;evi'ew undertaken to explore the opportunity for lottery support. Tillis resulted

in a ddail'ed deslgn Io« a venue tlh~t would fulfil w[des:~reatl cornrnunlty need. Planning:npproval was granted in September 1997 and a'l capital kottery award off5,29S,QOO was, granted in January 1998:.

Witl;, aqllast Wiltslh'ier appotntee] as main ccntrectora to the Iprojecl, work commenced on site 11m ear[y 1999.

'Builcl'ing handover was aehieved on 2 Th August 2000 ,alld followed ca chaHenging.year during which the administration base moved from the 18th century LOli1g Barn ,tl5l the Georgiafil Farmhouse. During construction the Norden Farm team managed tooonnnue to offer an extitiing, mnge of participatory alits events.

The successful completion of NGlrden Farm owes muclh to all those invotved and especially to Ikey funders - the National Lottery (tlhwUlgh the Afts Ceundlof England). the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. and 'Southern Arts.
