College to establish wetland bank

The college is preparing to establish a wet-
lands bank, pending state approval, College
President Stephen R. Briggs said.
Three areas of college property, the stream
near the Gunby Equine Center, the area known
as the “Oak Hill Bottoms” near the bypass and
property on Haywood Road, will be desig-
nated as protected wetlands area by the state.
In turn, the college will be able to sell “wet-
land credits” to private companies developing
property in the Etowah Valley River Basin.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Berry
to make good use of our property by earning
revenue and protecting these areas at the same
time,” Briggs said.
When local developers build on wetland
areas, they are required by law to replenish
wetland areas elsewhere. If the wetland bank
is approved, developers could buy credits
from the college to remain in compliance with
state law.
Vice President of Finance Brian Erb said
the bank would only limit development of the
property.
“Berry would retain limited use of the
land, provided we maintain the land as wet-
lands,” he said. “But we couldn’t build on the
property.”

There are many great
things about a liberal
arts college, and one of
them is the opportunity
to gain exposure to a
wide range of academic
pursuits while working
through the general edu-
cation curriculum. Berry
has taken this approach
to an entirely new level
by requiring students to
attend a certain number
of cultural events (C.E.
credits) before gradu-
ation, thereby expos-
ing our minds to the art,
music, and literature of
the world outside the
Berry Bubble.
Initially, this can seem bur-
densome because, as students,
we already have the responsi-
bilities of attending class, com-
pleting assignments and getting
a decent amount of sleep, all of
which are time-consuming and
sometimes stressful. But let us
look at it another way. Once
we graduate from Berry, we
likely are not going to have the
opportunity to attend lectures
on various topics outside of

With the voter registration dead-
line fast approaching, I can’t help but
wonder how many hundreds of Berry
students will take advantage of the
opportunity to vote? Politics may seem
boring, confusing or even irrelevant,
but caring about the world we live in is
not; I think we all would agree that it is
actually of great importance.
To me, a fundamental part of being
an American is following in the foot-
steps of those who have gone before
us—learning from those older and
wiser. I enjoy asking my grandparents
about the world they lived in, and tak-
ing the time to read and research the
history of our country.
Though it is often ignored, tradition
is very important. Tradition means the
handing down of statements, beliefs,
legends, customs, information, etc.
from generation to generation. How
much longer will we stand for progress
for progress’ sake alone? Should we
continue to advance if we don’t know
what we are advancing toward?
As a nation I think we have lost sight
of the “American Dream.” It’s not about
success and money but about freedom,
life, and the preservation of heritage
and culture. It’s about passing down
our stories to future generations.
Immigrants come here seeking the
one thing that continues to set America
apart—freedom. We have a govern-
ment by the people and for the people.
We can have life, liberty and the pur-
suit of happiness. It’s not that we’re
born into wealth as our inheritance; it’s
that we have the opportunities and the

When it comes to one’s personal life,
there is an inherent struggle between
the knowledge of what is best and
the action of choosing it. So often we
seek tangible objects when we innately
desire greater things in life, such as jus-
tice, love and peace. This phenomenon
is perplexing because it seems like it
should not be that way—if we know
what is best for us, then why do we
not choose it?
Wouldn’t learning to play an
instrument be more worthwhile and
bring more satisfaction than play-
ing video games? We might concede
that it would, and then spend hours
engrossed with the television. Mate-
rialism is not simply the desire of
material possessions such as fast cars,
big houses and lots of dough; it is the
overriding preoccupation with things
that we can feel or sense. This makes
