SEMICONDUCTOR DIODES AND APPLICATIONS

1.] With the help of energy band diagrams, distinguish between an

insulator, a semiconductor, and a conductor.

2.] What do you understand by the term doping? Differentiate between p-

type and n-type semiconductors.
OR
What is the purpose of doping? How does it change the characteristics
of a semiconductor?

3.] In a pure intrinsic semiconductor, explain the mechanism of

conduction by electrons & holes.

4.] Discuss the behavior of p-n junction under

a.) forward bias,
b.) reverse bias, and
c.) no bias conditions.

5.] Draw the V-I characteristics of a semiconductor diode. Write the diode
current equation. Mention the typical values of cut-in voltages for
Germanium & Silicon devices.

6.] Describe the physical mechanism for Avalanche breakdown & the
Zener breakdown.

7.] Draw & explain the working of a FWR with necessary wave forms.
Derive the expression for Idc & η.

8.] Define ripple factor. Show that for HWR RF is 1.21.

9.] Explain the need for filter & operation of capacitor filter with a neat
wave form.

10.] With a neat circuit diagram, explain Zener diode voltage regulation.
