Material Selection:

Pipelines are designed to operate within specified limits such that the
possibility of failure during the lifetime of the system is minimised. Therefore, the
material used and the method of manufacture is important in design considerations.
In order to meet the operational demands of the pipeline system, the following
properties of the steel pipe must be considered:
- Strength
- Toughness
- Ductility
- Weldability
- Corrosion resistance

After comparing between rigid and flexible pipelines, we decide that flexible
pipelines will be applied in this project. As we know, the majority of the flexible pipe
installed in Australian waters has been for static applications, mostly applied in
subsea field developments.
Utilizing a FPSO as production installation, it will deal with the amplitude
motions. Flexible is the most suitable option. Another factor will be considered is the
installed cost. Flexibles has the lowest installed cost; it means also the lowest
technical risk.
These are the advantages of flexible compared with the rigid pipeline:
-Storage upon reels or carousels reduces the restrictions on the type of required
installation vessel.
- The routing of the pipelines on the seabed is simplified as more extreme elevations
changes can be accommodated.
- The inherent lower thermal conductivity decreases the needs for externally-applied
insulation coatings.
- Transportation and logistics are easier when the installation location is removed
from spool bases.
