The formal dining room features the original brick

The living-room, one of the original rooms, has a

elements resembling Corinthian capitals.

W
hen the springtime comes again, gardeners
will be getting their hands dirty — more than
likely with vegetable starts. “A lot of people
are thinking about planting vegetable gardens,” said David
Salman of Santa Fe Greenhouses. “For most of the last
decade or two, the interest in vegetable plants has been
down, but it’s been going up since last year. A lot of people
are interested in home food production, which includes
fruit trees and berry plants and grapes.”
It makes sense to save a few dollars in this economic
downturn.
“It’s that and I also think many people are concerned
about food safety after the scares in recent years about
salmonella and spinach and tomatoes and peppers,”
Salman said. “And I think people have a genuine desire to
recapture the quality of home-grown produce.”
The trend was in full bloom by spring of last year. A
short piece in the June 2009 issue of Metropolitan Home
magazine cited the National Gardening Association’s
prediction that the number of Americans with vegetable
gardens would increase by seven million in 2009. Lisa
Higgins, the magazine’s executive editor, credited the
boom to a desire to eat healthier food; to people inspired
by First Lady Michelle Obama, who added a garden to the
White House; and to the financial advantage: the National
Gardening Association said an average 600-square-foot
garden, with an outlay of about $70 on the part of the
gardener, will yield 300 pounds of vegetables worth $600.
For spring, the vegetable “kings” are tomatoes, according
to Salman, who has had Santa Fe Greenhouses for 26
years (and an online branch, High Country Gardens, since
1993). “In Santa Fe, a lot of that interest in tomatoes is
centered in heirloom varieties, anything that’s been around
50 years or longer,” he said. “Then, as one might expect
here in New Mexico, chile peppers are probably number
two.
“The other big thing is herbs, and that has actually been
increasing for a long time now. You have heirloom lemon
basil varieites and the Italian basils, which are considered
the premium ones for authenticity and taste, then people
are planting a lot of lavender and dill and rosemary and
oregano. The nice thing about herbs is that they’re easily
grown in containers. You can do a combination pot, which
is very space- and water-efficient.” JANE PHILLIPS

Available: a fresh, snazzy remodel
By Paul Weideman

T his gorgeous property on Camino

Acoma, off of E. Zia Road, is the result
of a major remodel/expansion of a mid-
century home. It was concrete block, a
well-made one, according to builder Max
Aragon. The new walls of the 4 bedroom, 6-
bathroom house are 2 x 10 wood frame with
lots of blown-in insulation.
Aragon placed windows at the midpoint
of those thick walls, yielding deep sills both
inside and out — the sills were fashioned
from 3-inch, marbled stone from Jerusalem.
Wall-plaster tints, ceiling treatments,
and ceiling fans vary from room to room.
Bathrooms sport travertine floors, granite
surrounds and countertops, and maple
cabinets in dressing rooms. A feature
powder room has a special tile floor, walls
in an earth-red tint, and a beautiful, black-
granite pedestal sink from Stone Forest.
Also from local suppliers are fixtures from
Allbright & Lockwood and lighting from
Firefly in Nambé. All doors and cabinets
were hand-crafted by Aragon’s crew. The
cabinet drawers boast dovetail joinery, and
all cabinet drawers and doors use soft-close slides.
Many of the doorways are arched, and a long, arched
hallway running from the living room to the master
bedroom and one of three guest/kids’ rooms is a standout.
It’s lit by a row of square skylights, and electrical lighting
on both sides artfully hidden behind lips at the junction of
walls and the ceiling arch.
The master bathroom is equipped with a pair of Villeroy
& Boch washbasins sitting before a full-wall mirror that’s
punctuated by four stylish lights. The spa tub (from Santa
Fe Hardware) is set in a tiled, oval surround and offers
views to the ski basin. The glass shower has a steam feature.
Kitchen equipment includes a Wolf range and ovens,
and a Sub Zero refrigerator. The island and countertops are
covered in green granite.
A hand-distressed Douglas-fir floor graces the formal
dining room. The ceiling here is cedros (split juniper) set
herringbone-style on vigas — Aragon said all the vigas
in the house were harvested in Northern New Mexico. In
living room, the ceiling is latillas on big beams. The living
room holds one of four Rumford-style fireplaces.
