Saturday May 22nd was a beautiful day for a drive to the Pine area for lunch with a group of Bimmerheads all interested in enjoying the company of BMW enthusiasts while vistiting a restaurant in the Pine area. The turnout was great (12 cars) given that this was one busy weekend for for Bimmerheads with several events from which to choose.

We began at the park at Fountain Hills, normally an easy place to find, but on this Saturday, there was no fountain to be found. It wasn't running so the easy landmark was missing. Everyone attending found it with the exception of an enterprising soul in a very nice E28 535 who connected with us on the Beeline Highway as we left Fountain Hills. In total we had about 20 people and 12 BMWs on the drive.

We took the long way to Pine via Bush Highway, Globe/Miami and Highway 188 right past Roosevelt Lake. I haven't seen Roosevelt this full ever - the lake is really big now that the entire expansion area is full from the dam height increase completed in the late '80s. The lake was really beautiful. The road was treat too with light traffic and wonderful weather for our drive to Pine.

We stopped at a couple of scenic overlooks for pictures and conversation. We had a great time.

The group then continued up Highway 87 to the Rimside Grill just outside of Pine. We even had two Club members join us from the Prescott area when they met us that Rimside.

We met the owner Tamara who took great care of us. I highly recommend stopping at the Rimside Grill anytime you are in the Pine area - I am sure you will agree it is worth stopping there for a break from the road.

After a hearty lunch, everyone took off on their own direction back to Phoenix via various routes. A good time was had by all. I intend to do this drive for breakfast on weekends when it is really got in the Valley this summer! Anyone interested?

There's plenty to do

and the meeting places could change

Check out the calendar of meetings and look for the email notices for up to minute changes and the latest information of what is happening and where it is supposed to happen. Hear about a drive and don't want to go by yourself? Send me an email I am sure we can find you a seat or a passenger, the drives the club has been doing are a good time.

Quality time in any BMW is always good, bring along a dozen or more friends and their BMWs and it makes for a really good day.

As always, if you have an idea for a "Sunday drive" or a destination or maybe someone with a really interesting garage, feel free to put together an activity it is not that hard and someone on the board can assist in the process.

Taste tests. Gotta love them.

Last week I decided this was a great time for a contest between a couple of my favorites; Logan's Roadhouse and Texas Roadhouse.

It all started when I stopped by Texas Roadhouse for a quick dinner. I remarked to my companion that the decor was remarkably like Logan's Roadhouse. From the plank booths to the peanuts in buckets on the tables.

So now, was the food the same?

I decided to to do an experiment. I ordered a salad with honey-mustard dressing (delicious), homemade rolls (hot and fresh), sweet potato with mini-marshmallows and filet mignon.

It was an all around pleasant meal.

The very next evening, I headed over to Logan's Roadhouse. Yes, the decor was the same, but that's where it ended. I was not as impressed with the salad and rolls. The salad's mix and dressing fell a bit short and the rolls at the Texas Roadhouse were tastier.

Then, the arrived ... and

sweet potato and filet mignon it was evident that these two

restaurants were not the same.

The sweet potato arrived covered with melted mini-marshmallows and a very tasty carmel sauce. The filet came to the table thick, juicy and done to perfection.

So, to summerize: if you love great salad and rolls, Texas Roadhouse is the place to go.On the other hand for a top notch filet mignon and sweet potato, Logan's Roadhouse has your dish .

... it's Logan's for me.

os Caballeros Ranch. The exceptional buffet brunch well include a variety of desserts alog with tea, ••• coffee or lemonade. We have arranged a separate area in the resort dining room for the BMW club members and guests to review the results of the rallye, recognize the top winners with prizes and of course have a meal together. The rallye drive will be a planned course with the opportunity to identify numerous landmarks, obtain a hand of Poker cards

and answer a number of entertaining questions. It should be fun, interesting and challenging time for the driver, navigator and guests that join you for the trip. If possible I would suggest two or more people in each car in order to fully appreciate the activities involved in the rallye.

We will meet 9 A.M. at the Coffee Plantation - 9409 W. Westgate Blvd near the Jobing .com arena in Glendale with cars starting out at 10 A.M. Map and rallye instructions will be provided at the 9:45 driver's

meeting the day of the event. The total price of $20 per person has been established in order to control your cost in these economic times with the Roadrunner BMW Chapter subsidizing the balalnce. For all you Club Racers, auto crossers and driving schoool fans out there we have a different type of driving event to challenge you as well. The Gimmick Rallye will be fun for everyone. So round up a traveling companion or two and come join us for a very different and exciting experience on October 23rd.

To confirm participation, please send a note with your name, phone number and a check for $20 per person made out to Roadrunner BMW CCA.

This should be mailed to: Bill Gislason 26012 N, 42nd lane Phoenix, AZ 85083 no later than Saturday, October 16 so we can provide a headcount to the restaurant. If you have questions or you miss this deadline and still wish to participate call Bill at 623-780-3737.

The Michelin Pilot Sport PS2

Most of us are familiar with the Michelin brand, it has been around for about a hundred years. Long assiciated with the highest level of quality, the Michelin brand is the first choice of auto makers like BMW Motorsport, Mercedes Benz AMG, Ferarri, Audi and Porsche.

The Pilot Sport PS2 is among the best performance tires available.

Now for some "technical" stuff. The PS2 uses what Michelin calls "Variable Contact Patch" technology to insure that the tire is always using the maximum amount of allowable contact patch in all situations.

There is a 30% groove to tread ratio on the outer edge and 40% on the inner edge giving the tire superior dry traction along with the four large circumferential grooves that make this design very efficient in the wet as well.

Marty Saltzman said "I will not seek ... " So, when our long-term perfect president says it's someone else's turn to take the helm of an 850+ member group, the rest of the board, including myself, look at each other with blank stares and say to ourselves "not me, I love these cars but I'm not crazy!" The truth is that Pres. Marty Saltzman did such a good job for so long no one ever considered that he wouldn't be the "leader of the group" forever! But, like all organizations, in order to grow and evolve to meet the changing needs of its membership, fresh blood must be infused. The knowledge of the "old guard" added to the energy and excitement of the "young ones" creates the perfect mix of passion and wisdom. For me, it has been an honor and pleasure to serve as a board member of such a wonderful, diverse and enthusiastic group of outstanding people. So, when I was elected as Chapter President a month or so ago, I felt a little overwhelmed at the responsibilities of the office and the size of the shoes I was asked to fill. Nevertheless, my parents, boy scout leaders and church leaders of my youth, taught me to always do my best at every job or task I was given. I have made that philosophy an integral part of who I am and is a mimimum standard by which I live my life. I continually strive to "under promise and over perform" in every aspect of my professional and private life. So, I am hopeful, with the support of our "Ulitmate Chapter Leadership Team" and volunteers from our membership, to provide exciting, stimulating, fun and save events for our entire Chapter.

How each of us came to own and drive the "Ultimate Driving Machine" are stories I enjoy hearing from our members. My story on finding a BMW is a little unique. I was actually working for General Motors as a "test driver" at the now defunct Desert Proving Grounds in East Mesa. After a few years testing experience and good fortune, I was able to participate in some "Special Project". One of which was the secret testing of 3 BMWs in hot weather. My task was to drive them into the ground and prove that those "German cars" weren't any better that the American cars I'd been testing for the last couple years. Well, needless to say, the difference to me as a driver was dramatic. In areas where I thought the cars would experience serious problems based on my experience in GM cars, the BMWs actually excelled! I had never experienced such responsiveness, handling and feel in any other car I had tested. I couldn't stop talking

... and now a few words from our new President

and thinking about how amazing the cars were. I actually looked forward to going to work each day and even volunteered to do second shifts just so I could drive those cars! I was in love! and that love affair hasn't ended yet. What great machines we get to drive. I feel so blessed every time I get in and turn the key of my "Ultimate Driving Machine-BMW".

If you haven't attended a BMW club race, instructor training, driving school, auto cross, road rallye, fun run, car show charity social event or board meeting, you are really missing out on what the club is really all about. Sure, the "Roundel Magazine" is the world's largest club magazine andone of the better thought out periodicals available, but perhaps the real reason you joined the club was to have fun with your BMW and meet other like-minded BMW automotive enthusiasts. So, if you are curious, like I was 5 years ago, I strongly encourage you to find out more bout the club in which you are a member, Attend one of our monthly board meetings and join us for some of our events. The whole purpose of these events is YOU and we have a wede variety coming up in the next 3 months. In October, we have a "Gimmick Rallye". In November we have a Car Show at the Pavilions in Scottsdale (last time we had more than 75 BMWs) and joint "Fun Run" with the Tucson Chapter in southern Arizona, In December, there is another joint activity with the local Porsche Club doing an "Auto Cross" at Tempe's Diablo Stadium. In January, we'll be kicking off the New Year with a party hosted by one of our club members where we'll announce all the events for 2011 and later in the month we'll have another "Fun Run". There is truly something for everyone!

So, my question is simple, will you come out and play with us? Enjoy YOUR Ultimate Driving Machine, meet some great people and help make this the best automotive club in Arizona!
