An identity may be defined as theindividual characteristics, style or manner that is fundamental to a person and bywhich that person is recognised. Identity isinfluenced by personal choice but also bysociety through existing social and culturalsituations.

Caribbean people organize themselves aroundvarious institutions. These include:Race and ethnicity ±identities may emergebased on particular racial/ethnic characteristicsof individuals. These are often powerfulidentification points which can cut acrossgeographical lines.Religion ±membership in particular religiousstructures also offers a strong basis for identification.
