lorida artist Janet Rogers makes theprocess of painting figures in water-color seem almost effortless in that shecaptures the likeness and personality of hersubjects without laboring over all the details. Sheincorporates gestured strokes of transparent color, natural blends of warm and cool pigments, andjust enough detail to capture a person’s individualappearance. Her floral paintings seem just as ap-proachable with their combinations of wet-in-wetblends of bright colors, well-focused accents of white paper, and judicious use of hard edges.Although Rogers’ techniques are not so easyto master, her demonstrations make it clearshe can teach almost anyone to improve theirskills in watercolor paintings. She emphasizesthe need to practice, to start over when thingsfail, and to develop strong drawing skills. Sheconnects with students by confessing that sheshares the same need to constantly remindherself about the importantsteps that must be takenwhen painting. Moreover, shedebates the various optionsavailable to her and acknowl-

edges when she may have made thewrong choice. Students watching herlive or filmed demonstrations recognizethat although Rogers has developed ad-vanced skills, she still understands whatthe rest of us are trying to learn andhow much we need encouragement. Most of Rogers’ paintings start outwith the creation of loose graphitedrawings and progress toward to theapplication of transparent watercolor. The artist uses large golden taklonsynthetic hair brushes on sheetsof Arches watercolor paper or onDaler-Rowney’s new Langton Prestigepaper. She recommends that studentsundertake several separate kinds of ex-ercises before actually beginning theirstudio paintings: drawing, sketchingin watercolor from life or photographs, and using three warm–up paintingexercises. Here’s a detailed descriptionof those recommended steps.
GettinG reAdy:
1. Try theses warm-up exercises:
• Paint with only one color.
Develop asketch with only one tube color andwater. It will help you develop aninstinctive sense of how much wateris needed to achieve various degreesof transparency and opacity. Thisexercise should be done without draw-ing first. Another goal is to connectshadow shapes.
