~_ ........ t,p year is 2000 and the time is now for Rice to step forth into the future.
Rice is a shinning example of the future now that the is becoming more modern. Since the first brick was laid in 955, Rice has always considered what additions and reno will make it a better school. This year the library new Toshiba computers with internet access; the r Center became the new writing lab; lights were In-
led on the football field; and the Pulaski side of the school got fresh, clean look. These are a few things that helped Rice move into the new millennium.
important than the renovations, however, are the and dedicated staff, faulty, and students who come Brother Rice each day and put an enormous amount of effort ato making Rice the best school it can possibly be.
When Brother Rice opened its doors forty-four years ago, no thought about the year 2000. However, when 1999 came to end and 2000 was just about to begin, consider what Rice w up against: the dreaded Y2K. Although the disasters predicte never happened, the Brother Rice community was prepare Semester exams were completed, and every file at Rice w saved on back up disks.
As each day passes, Brother Rice walks one step closer to th future ... but as the saying goes, some things never change, an this can be said for the Brother Rice Crusader also. The Spiritu aspect of Brother Rice nourishes each Crusader to help him ~ "Act Manfully in Christ Jesus." Clubs such as the Key Clu National Honor Society, and Edmund Rice Society still strive t make Brother Rice and the world a better place. So, some thin the future will not change. And that is what makes this schoc special.

Head Coach Steve Nye talks with members oj the while they grab a quick drink during a break in the action.
During Homecoming week each member of the Brother Rice community was given a chance to sit back, relax, and celebrate school pride
through the activities during the week, the dance, and of course the game. All throughout the week, students were allowed to shed their everyday school clothes and wear what they chose. During all lunch periods students had the chance to dazzle their peers with their Singing ability, wrestle with each other, and participate in other activities. These activities allowed students to experience Rice Pride in ways they had never thought of before.
At the Pep Rally, students let loose and helped hype up their football team for their upcoming battle with Notre Dame. Team captains Vic Yanz, Steve Scott, and Jim Carrol gave exciting speeches, which in turn, inspired gym-shaking applause from the student body. Head Coach Steve Nye challenged the team when he said, "Two things the football team never does: lose the Homecoming game and lose to 51. Laurence."
Going into the game, the Crusaders were determined to get revenge on Notre Dame for the '98 embarrassment they had suffered. In an emotional game, the Crusaders defeated Notre Dame 20·7 in front of a field of excited and grateful Crusader fans.

Founder's Day
Each year the Brother Rice community gathers together to celebrate Founder's Day. During the celebration, the school honors its founder, Blessed Edmund Ignatious Rice, and gives thanks to the many people who have helped the Christian Brothers' community.
The festivities began with Seniors Nicholas Shields, Lorenzo Martinez, and Dan Casey giving speeches. Nicholas Shields spoke about Dr. Martin Luther King and the influences both Dr. King and Blessed Edmund Rice have had on his life. Lorenzo Martinez spoke about his Hispanic heritage, his family, and the Influences of his heritage, his family, and Blessed Edmund Rice on him. Dan Casey spoke about the effects of Blessed Edmund Rice on his life and how going to Brother Rice has enhanced his own life. "I'm glad I had a chance to talk about what Brother Rice has done for me. It was a great experience," said Dan Casey. Ms. Marge Nykaza then reflected on Blessed Edmund Rice and the influence he has had on her life.
After the Founder's Day speeches, the newest members of the Brother Rice Hall of Fame, Mr. Edward Zabrocki and Mr. Hal Ross, were

inducted into the Hall of Fame. "It's about time both men have been elected into the Brother Rice Hall of Fame," said counselor Mr. Jack Carlson.
"I feel very honored and have enjoyed the last thirty-five years at Brother Rice," said Mr. Zabrocki. During his tenure at Brother Rice, Mr. Zabrocki has contributed much time to his school and also the community. He is a full time counselor, teaches American Literature, and has been mayor of Tinley Park for nineteen years.
Mr. Ross has taught at Brother Rice for thirty-two years and teaches English, Speech, and Debate. He has also been very influential with extra curricular activities. He serves as moderator for the Key Club and the soccer team, is the Blood Drive Advisor, and is the spiritual director of the Brother Rice Society.
With over sixty years of combined teaching experience, with much interaction with their students, and with positive influences on their colleagues, it is gratifying to see these two men inducted into the Brother Rice Hall of Fame.
"Mr. Ross is a reliable person and a great Christian role model for the students," said senior Joe Charles.

"Academics is the menta! growth and maturity of the student through rigorous study
and nine months of relentless struggles. " - Mr. Sedlacek
'99·'00 was a year of academic trials and tribulations for everyone. Whether it be freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior year, there was always a project to be completed, a test to study for, or some last minute homework to be completed during Channel One. With each new day, there was a new set of challenges to be met
For the freshmen, it was a year of new beginnings as they learned what was to be expected of them for the next three years. Teachers and classes offered new challenges that tested these young men.
Armed with the experiences from freshman year, the sophomores continued their academics in math, science, foreign language, English, and Theology. This year is the last year that students take gym, and the first opportunity they have to take an elective.
For the juniors, it became a time of transition as they became upperclassmen. Classes became increasingly difficult as students prepared for the constitution test, the SAT, and the ACT. However, as classes became more demanding, they also became more enjoyable.
Finally, for the seniors, it was a time to complete their high school education. In addition to their class load and their C.PA, there was also the added pressure of applying to colleges. "I can't believe it's time to graduate! This has been the hardest school year yet, but I wouldn't trade a minute of it for the world," said Brad Smith.

profeSSion. From the cashier in the grocery store to the
teacher in the classroom, people use math. That is why it is important to have a strong background in mathematics. If people stop and think about it, if they don't know bow to count, they won't even know how much their paycheck is!
"We offer a wide range of courses to meet the needs of all of the students. We make extensive use of placement tests to help ensure students are properly placed," said Department Chair Joe Augustyn. Brother Rice also has math teachers who really share a love for their subject. "I like the experience of seeing students when they get it and appreciate the beauty of math," continued Mr. Augustyn.
Recognizing the need for producing mathematically literate students, the math department uses the latest mathematical technology like graphing utilities to enhance instruction and examine problems from a variety of perspectives. Courses are beginning to use a new computer program called Power Point to enhance student presentations. In addition to using state of the art technology, the math depamnent also has teachers who devote extra time and energy to help produce the most well-prepared math students in llJinois.
Through experienced, dedicated, and devoted math teachers and hardworking, creative, math students, Brother Rice establishes a math tradition that produces students who are more than capable of handling complex mathematical situations that they may encounter in a fast-paced, technology based world,
Instead of letting students whip out the "trusty old calculator= to solve difficult problems, math teachers analyze each problem. As a result of this one-on-one approach, students are now beginning to understand math better. "My math teachers help me stop rushing

As technology advances and changes the way people learn each and every day, there is one subject that will forever remain the same ... English.
In addition to the stress on writing, reading the great works of literature is always emphasized. With classic literary works such as The Lord of The Hies, "Julius Caesar," The Great Gatsby, and Heart of Darkness taught from freshmen year through senior year, the emphasis on teaching the classics is evident.
Grammar, punctuation, and spelling are three essential aspects of the English Department that are always emphasized. No matter what the future brings, learning to read and write well is a must. English teachers such as Ms. Searls and Mrs. Hall help students to do just that. Mrs. Searls and her star list errors have boggled the minds of many. Who knew sentences could be written without using words such as have, we, and you? If you have been taught by Ms. Searles, you know that not only can you write without relying on these words, but your writing skills improve dramatically. Mrs. Hall not only teaches Sophomore and Junior English, but she also teaches Journalism. The journalism class is responsible for producing two great works of art each and every year, "The Crusader," the yearbook and "The Standard," the newspaper. The writing skills of journalism students vastly improve with each article they write.
However, along with this emphasis on classics, technology has crept into the English Department. "1 have my English classes looking for information on the Internet in the Library. They then use this information to complement their reading and for their research papers, said Mrs. Hall.
Students in the English Department seemingly have the best of two worlds, the classics and modern technology. The furure of technology combined with the classics!

SOCIAL STUDIES
Shapin The Future For Tomorrow
ngton Peterson pays attention to his World History teacher while studiously taking notes

Th"'" who do not 1"", from history are doomed to repeat it," is a famous quote that the Social Studies department stands and lives by as a phrase that epitomizes the purpose for their curriculum.
"Teaching is one fourth preparation and three fourths theatre," said Mr. Duffy, department chair.
With this concept, the Social Studies faculty teaches the student body new ideas and concepts that will hopefully 'Give them a point of reference regarding their pasts," said Mr. Elfner. "Who's buried in Grant's tomb? is an old joke, but if you don't know who Grant is then the joke will make no sense to you. By knowing history, you enrich your everyday life," continued Mr. Elfner.
Acedemics
History "It's the best!," said Mr. Duffy. "It's full of great teachings," and that would explain the wide variety of subjects offered by the Social Studies department.
Ranging from the extensive required courses of World History and U.S. History to in-depth fascinating courses on Vietnam and Chicago History, the Social Studies curriculum, "offers something for every student who is willing to be prepared and do the necessary work," said Mr. Elfner.
The Social Studies department is allowing students to relive the past through their teachings today and giving them a commanding lead on the shaping of the future for tomorrow and beyond.

Using Technology To Explore The Future
Science
Having one of the most advanced science programs in the state, the Science Department, which is under the direction of Brother Hayes, helps to show students the fundamentals of everyday reason. When students step through the doors of chemistry room 111 or the Petkus-Crane Physics Center, they become intrigued by the changing world around them.
One of the things that most intrigues students is the hands-on experience tbat they receive and their ability to perform and see actual experiments rather than read about them in a textbook. In Biology, students can dissect a frog and see what makes that frog operate. In Earth Science, students learn about the environment that surrounds them. In Chemistry, students can witness reactions between different chemicals. In Physics, students can use computers to record and analyze data on experiments of motion. "Science helps give students the wonder of how the world works
Academics
and the ability to ask questions that will help lead students to logical answers," said Brother Hayes.
A useful learning tool that is used by teachers in the science world is technology. Through special grants, the science department has been able to purchase both new laptop computers for the Biology classes and special instruments for Physics. Students will use these new tools to analyze their own EKG rhythm, run special programs to aide in the teaching of the classes, and run experiments using the computers and compare their results with those of the computer.
Through their science classes, faculty and students are experiencing constant growth and change in the world and the role that science will play in those changes. "By studying Science, I am able to understand how things came about and how they work in the world," said Junior Beta Garcia.

Leading Men With Faith in Their Future
Theolo
Some seniors take advantage of the peer ministry course which allows them to help at school masses. These students are role models for underclassmen to follow.
The Religion department allows a student to become a responsible and productive member of Brother Rice and its community. Whether watching movies
or reading from a textbook, students are taught important Christian values. "The religion course gives the student the ability to deal with moral issues," said Brother Carty.
A religion curriculum will help the students later in dealing with one another and how Christians have an impact on society. "Religion helps students better understand themselves and their faith," said Mr. Knoell. As a student leaves Brother Rice, he will take with him a full knowledge of the Catholic teachings of the church.
Service hours are done by both juniors and seniors. Key Club, St. Gelasius, and volunteering at various nursing homes and homeless shelters allows the participant to fullfill these duties. "Service hours make the students aware of the people who are less fortunate," said Mr. Knoell. Students are also encouraged to use other charity and helpful means in completing these requirements.
Retreats and Kairos are important in student interaction. Students learn how to express their thoughts and to expand their understanding of their Christian morality.

Language Of The New Millennium Foreign Language
The hallway just past room 209 has its own aura of liveliness. With the poster decorated walls and sunlit rooms full of exotic dialects, this hall
is a gateway to a whole new world. " I want people to enjoy this hallway and look forward to walk down it," said Mrs. Seibt. This hallway is home to the foreign language department. For at least two years, Brother Rice students are able to experience new languages, countries, and cultures. With "Day of the Dead," "Mardi Gras," and "National Foreign Language Week," students not only learn the language but are exposed to different ways of life.
It is through foreign languages that students have the ability to expand their horizons with other languages and cultures. At Brother Rice students are required to take at least two years of a foreign language. During
Academics
this period, all students experience a new world that was once not known to them. By the time a student graduates, he will have had a full understanding and appreciation of the various and unique cultures that surround today's society.
In the global society which exists, a foreign language is a necessity. Learning the language pushes a student towards excellence but at the same time makes him more aware of diversity. With the outgoing teaching staff of this department, students learn to open themselves to new sights and sounds. A trip to Madrid, Berlin, or Paris is only restricted to the room you choose to enter. The world is really at your fingertips.

Business/Physical Education Work Hard, Play Hard!!
The first week of Mr. Twardy' s gym class is something every student at Brother Rice vividly will remember for life. "Conditioning is good for them," said Mr. Twardy commenting on the one week of intense physical conditioning that every student endures as a freshman and a sophomore.
At the start of this one semester course, students swim one length of the pool and then are separated into two groups, beginner and above average swimmers. Beginning swimmers flTSt learn to swim while the above average swimmer participates in gym.
Gym class teaches the proper way to stay in shape. Each class begins with at least five minutes of warm-ups. Students then get to partake in a variety of sports, such as dodgeball, volleyball, basketball, and soccer. During certain times of the year, students might even get to play a competitive game of softball or take part in relay races around the track. Students are often timed running the track circuit. "Students like to be tested. It makes them want to try harder," said Mr. Twardy. Swimming teaches Students all the necessary strokes and swimming techniques that they need. When students aren't busy sharpening their SWimming techniques, they can often be found competing in relay races or a game of water polo. Advanced swimmers are taught lifesaving survival techniques, for example how to form floats out of their shirts and pants.
Gym and SWimming instructors Mr. Twardy, Mr. Gleeson, and Mr. Dombkowski spend each semester teaching their students all the skills they will need to stay in shape as they continue into their adult Iives.'·Everything is something they will do for the rest of their Iives,"said Mr. Twardy. It's "fitness for life."

With the new millennium approaching, computers are being further used in the development of communication, relationships, and business negotiations. Agreements can now be made with a simple click with a mouse. Through the Business Department, students begin to get a taste of what the future might hold regarding
computers and business.
As the business world changes, so, too, does Brother Rice. Each year, classes adjust in order for students to get a full understanding of the business world. Oasses are offered based on computing which have caused the changes In the business world. Freshman year, key· boarding is taken the semester opposite Physical Education. This allows students to make progress working with computers and to get a feel for the function they serve. It also alds in future research paper writing in ensuing years. Several students take the computer programming class Visual Basic, which replaced Quick Basic, as their sophomore year elective. Mr. Grogan teaches this introductory class. With updated technology and the use of computers, . 'The class really helps prepare for the modern life," sophomore Elbot Gentry cornmented. This class lays a foundation for basic computer programming, how it is actually done, and how It associates with a job. Other classes under the Business Department include Business Law, Accounting, and Advanced Accounting. These classes help students recognize that business and computers will be a large part of the future and hpw people will live dally. Every one of the classes helps students realize that there is not a a lot of time to waste and that it is never tOO soon to learn more: the future is now.

As we look back on the year, our eyes must fall upon a group that is sometimes overlooked. They are the Brother Rice Marching Crusaders. Not only do they play at each football game, and at countless competitions, but also winter and spring concerts. We look upon the band not only for its great work, but also for those who help !nSpire that work. Mr. Patrick J. Henning and Dr. Leo Henning are known for their superior work in music. WIth all the thanks bestowed upon them, a little more is bestowed upon Dr. Leo Henning. Throughout the years at Brother Rice, students travel along a journey through the art world, first expe.riencin.g th.eir beginning talents as a freshman, and developing their skills to become a skilled artisan as a senior. Students can convey their thoughts, feelings, and emotions to other students by displaying the examples of their artwork throughout the halls of Brother Rice. While the classes are geared to let the students express themselves, the Brother Rice Art Department teaches the students the history of art and the different types of careers in the art field. What one might think of as an expression class, is now showing students how to express themselves as artists from ancient history did.

Library IGuidance
Researching your Way through Life
Students take time during their free period to study in the library.
W~ether it is to find materials for a project, or just for a quiet
place to do your homework, Brother Rice's library is the place to go. The library, a.k.a. the Pilon Library Resource Center is visited often by students. Many classes are held in the reference room, and researching students are a common sight in the confines of Brother Rice's library. Many types of materials are at the disposal of students to use in various reports and presentations, including magazines, newspapers, periodicals, and electronic encyclopedia's. Librarians are always on staff to help students in finding materials that are needed. Also, the library has a computer card catalog that students can use to locate books. One of the new additions to the library this year is the new Zap Me online computer service. Students now have access to the Internet and can go online to use the web for researching school reports and projects. The new computers are great, and it's really great that you can go online while in the library.
No matter what year, the guidance department plays a key role
in helping and developing students. From notifying a student of a job opportunity to just being someone to talk to, the Guidance counselors constantly Impact the lives of Brother Rice students. The members of the Guidance Department never stop caring. From the moment freshmen start their first official day of school, their counselors are already hard at work. Meetings with freshmen in the first few days ensure relaxation to anyone with cold feet. The Guidance Department gets sophomores in the college process by helping students prepare for the PSAT. Junior year students are encouraged to take ACT and SAT tests, and at the same time to look for possible colleges and careers. Senior year students are usually overwhelmed with the college application process. Guidance counselors help students complete these applications and get them to their desired colleges. The Guidance Department is one of the hardest working groups in Brother Rice and deserves much credit.

Edmund Rice believed the future of education lay in going beyond the limits of the school room and school day. His vision of
the future is taking place now at Brother Rice. Together, the people in the Brother Rice community share Edmund Rice's philosophy and beliefs.
Learning swimming techniques from Mr. Dombkowski to "experiencing" the German language from Brother Martin; from Mrs. Lucheon's complex mathematical problems to one of Mr.
Sullivan's vocabulary tests, Brother Rice students are continuously
preparing their minds for what awaits them after the completion of
their formal education. What many students don't realize, is the every day hard work of classroom teachers is nurturing their minds now, which will eventually help them shape the future of our country.
Many parents of Brother Rice students work hard to send their sons to a school which will prepare them with all the tools needed to continue their journey through higher education. By making an investment in their son's education now, parents have made an invaluable investment for not only their son's future, but also the future of the country.
What makes students strive for excellence? Why should they take time to learn now? Students realize that Brother Rice is the foundation upon which they will build the rest of their lives. What Crusaders do now will help shape their future. Whether it is academics, sports, community service, or organizations, all of these have the common theme of contributing to the Christian ideals and values taught at Brother Rice that will guide students for the rest of their lives. The Brother Rice community molds boys into men who will have the vision to lead and achieve in many different fields after the academic pursuits have been completed.
The teachers, coaches, faculty, and parents all contribute to help build a young man's moral and academic fiber from the time he first enters the halls filled with Edmund Rice's vision. The students begin building their path to the future, brick by brick, floor by floor, year by year. This foundation and design for the future begins now and continues as the young Crusader proceeds into the new Millenium and the pursuit of life-long learning.

*Do not try to have all the teachers know your name. It probably means you are always in trouble. *

When the 2:45 bell sounds, young men at Brother Rice gradually develop from students to athletes. The expectation of an athlete is one of unmeasurable standards. He has
to exhibit talents on the field as well as in the classroom. The educational tools taught in the classroom carry onward to the athletic activities. The student's mind, body, and soul are all tuned to what the main focus is: team. Without team, Crusader sports would not encounter success.
As an old adage goes, there is no "I" in team. Each athlete overlooks his accomplishments for the sake of his
earn. This is apparent by the performance given by teams. For the first time in five years, the football earn advanced to the state and prep bowl playoffs. The cross country and soccer teams made valiant efforts in their season as well. The addition of new lights to Joe Johnston Stadium has rejuvenated school pride that was once thought to be lost.
If asked by students or a faculty member, characteristics of a Crusader would have to entail someone who is hard working, dedicated, and ready to strive to overcome all obstacles to rise above the rest.
The attitude carries onward to the coaches and staff. Their responsibilities are to oversee the progression of the team and each of his fellow athletes. The team, in a sense, becomes a family. With the presence of a family-like atmosphere in the school, the athletic programs show us what Brother Rice is all about, Acting Manfully in Christ Jesus.

CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNING, RUNNING!
~ ost people would consider it insane to \...1 J run an average of eight miles a day.
Most people would consider it insane to do it for fun, let alone run for competition. Brother Rice calls it cross country, and the teammates relish it.
Anyone who has ever been at the finish chute of a cross country meet realizes just how much energy the runners - put into their performances.
The team this year was strongly united in order to finish successfully across the board this season. Under the leadership of coaches Don Molenda and Jack Hackett, seniors Dan Winek, Mike Wazio, and Pat McNally led the cross country team in an unstoppable year.
"There were no gimmicks this year. We ran to our fullest and to our maximum capability. Every
race we ran with a picture of winning, and that is what we strived for in practice, meets, and invitationals, said senior Greg Potter.
The team placed third in the Catholic League and second in the Regionals. The varsity gave an outstanding performance in the Catholic League. "We had a very successful season. It was very satisfying to run with a bunch of talented runners, and I will always remember this year the most," added Greg Potter. The Frosh/Soph showed that they were capable of winning also as the season progressed.
The future of the team is here and now. The team always had "unification" as its team motto. No matter if it was twenty years ago or the present. This motto is what has kept the cross country team going strong and what will continue to make it strong for years to come.
