“May I have this dance?”She looked up, her train of thought broken. He stood over her, smiling gently with a look of great sincerity in his eyes. He offered her his hand and she slowly placed hers in it. His warm handsoon enveloped her own and she stood to meet him. Soft jazz music played in the background. He placed his right hand on the small of her back and held his left hand in the air, waiting for her to lay her hand in his. She smiled as she placed her left hand gently on his shoulder and her righthand fell perfectly into his open palm. They danced for a few minutes in an easy silence. She was lost in thought and had not noticedthat he had not taken his eyes off of her since the moment their dance started. “May I ask you aquestion?”She broke out of her trance suddenly and looked at him questioningly, “What?”“A question,” he said. “I'd like to ask you one. If you don't mind, that is.”“Go ahead.”“How are you?”She let out a faint laugh.“What's so funny?”“Usually when you ask permission to ask a question, the question has a bit more... weight to it,that's all,” she said.“I was hoping you would say something like that.”He smiled and they continued their dance. “I don't want you to give me a superficial answer. Idon't want an answer that you might give to your friends. I don't want to hear 'fine,' because I knowthat's not a real answer. I want you to tell me how you are, deep down. I want to know what's going onin that head of yours that has made you so quiet tonight.”She sighed lightly. What was it about him that made her want to be so open and honest? Was it because he wasn't afraid to be open and honest?“I'm terribly lonely,” she said, not recognizing the sound of her voice when she admitted whathad been plaguing her mind. Her sudden confession seemed to make time stand still, each second that passed without his response felt like an eternity. Her mental dam began to falter and doubt started totrickle into her mind.“I'm here with you,” he said.“That's part of the problem,” she said, breaking away from his embrace. She turned and movedto the window and stared out into the night.“I'm not going to play dumb and act like I don't know what you're talking about,” he said, walking over to her and putting his hands on her waist. “Because I do.”His touch was electric. She couldn't pin it on one detail, but he was very special. She knew hewas one the made for her. She turned and faced him, hugging him tightly. His strong arms wrappedaround her and at that moment, she felt completely at peace. A kind of peace she had not felt for a verylong time and with it she found the strength to look him eye to eye. She opened her mouth to speak, but he spoke first.“I love you.”The words resounded in her ears and penetrated her to the bone. The electricity brought on byhis touch was nothing like what was going through her right now. She laid her head against his chestand felt a warmth spread through her.“I love you, too,” she said. They stayed in each other's arms for the longest time, until she spoke.“May I ask you a question?”“You may.”“Are you going to hug me all night or are you going to kiss me like you wanted to do themoment you stepped through the door?”
