I am a therapist and coach in Portland, OR and I run a bi-monthly telephone support group for people committed to changing their lives.

If you like this workbook, I invite you to explore all of the resources available at the website. Remember, getting your life together isn't about GTD, or Steven Covey or Tim Ferris. It's about action. It's about resolving to do business differently and then take action to make it happen.

You may know from your own experience that the right book or the right technique isn't the answer. Take a look at your bookshelf. You might have stuff sitting on there that you've had around for years and just haven't ACTED on it.

Why don't people act? Because they don't want to put out the effort to make things happen for themselves. Call it procrastination, call it ADHD. Whatever you want to call it, it's getting in the way. It may be getting in YOUR way.

If you really are ready to take action, then put some accountability into your life. Enlist the support of similarly minded friends or acquaintances. Be sure you can meet together at least monthly, bi-monthly is better.

Drop me an email or send me a message through scribd. I'm happy to answer any questions and I can tell you more about how you can hire me, for much less than you might think, to coach you into action. Keep reading, but more importantly, TAKE ACTION.

1. Introduction
Chapter Outcomes:
At the end of this Chapter, you will be able to:
Describe ‘goal setting’
Explain why goal setting is important to you
Explain why the goal setting process often fails
Explain why you haven’t succeeded at setting or achieving goals to date (if this is the case)This Chapter is mostly reading about and understanding goal setting - what it’s all about, and why it is soimportant. Don’t worry if you have to read the chapter several times to fully understand the material, because it’s important that you do before you move on.
1.1 Goal Setters
Goal setting is not new. For thousands of years, prominent citizens and civilisations have used goalsetting in some form to plan and then achieve incredible feats of engineering, exploration, discovery orwar.Imagine if Captain Cook or Christopher Columbus didn’t have goals to explore the new world? Or if theancient Egyptians didn’t have a ‘goal’ for commemorating their dead Pharaohs? (Slave labour helpedtoo!). All of the great wonders of ancient civilisations would not exist if some visionary didn’t have thegoal to build them. And of course, all the major military battles in history, from Roman times to modernbattles, were all won (or lost) as a result of a strategy that evolved from a simple goal.In today’s capitalist society, there are numerous business men and women who have succeeded throughgoal setting and planning. The late Kerry Packer (1937-2005) rose to become the wealthiest man inAustralia through his media interests, despite being reportedly dyslexic and, as Kerry Packer himself said“academically stupid”. Was this just good luck – partly, but he also had a strategic plan for this businessempire that evolved from his personal goals (mostly to prove his father wrong, who had labelled Kerrythe “family idiot”) and the goals he established for his business.I’m sure you can think of other ‘successful’ people - whether they’re a well known public figure, someoneat work, or someone in your circle of friends – and I’m 99% sure they’ve all got where they are, notbecause of good luck (although this may help) but because of good life management. In other words – GOAL SETTING!Then of course there are the people like you and me. We’re ‘normal’ people that just want the best forour family and to live a happy, comfortable life. Or perhaps you’re more ambitious than that? It doesn’tmatter how big or small your ambitions are, the best (the only) way to get there is to prepare a Life Planbuilt around your own personal goals.Putting it simply:
…people who succeed have goals, and people who have goals succeed.
This is probably the most important message from this chapter. To reinforce this key message (we’ll bedoing this with other key messages throughout this workbook), write it down on a separate piece of paperin BIG LETTERS and stick it somewhere obvious. Read it to yourself or out aloud every day – read itwith conviction, like to truly believe it. Let the power of your mind through positive thinking and ideareinforcement help you embrace this wonderful process.Of course, you may already be a seasoned goal setter, in which case this workbook will give you somegreat tips to support your goal-setting journey.
