Line and Staff Relations
Introduction to the case
 R & company ltd is an organization having a
total strength of about 2000 employees.
 It has a PERSONAL OFFICER for the factory
having 300 workers and a DIRECTOR
(PERSONNEL) at the corporate office.
 They has one Union commanding a good
membership.
 One day union office bearer wanted a meeting
with personal officer.
 The personnel officer didn't allow the union
office bearer to meet

• The union argued that they wanted an immediate


meeting on an urgent issue.
• Personnel officer said that he would meet the
branch secretary or assistant secretary to sort out
the issue.
• The members started behaving noisy and
disturbing the work.
• Personnal officr wanted to take immediate action
and he hunted the assistance of the Director
(personnel)

• Director permitted the personnel officer to go head


to take action.
• At the mean time the line manager interfered and
solved the issue.
• The director got annoyed and he asked personnel
officer to explain about current situation.
• Personnel officer explained that line manager
interfered and solved the union issue.
• The director was not satisfied and the personnel
officer was confused.
Questions raised from the
case study
Whether the personnel officer was right in
asking for advice and then not following that
advice of his chief.

a) Yes, because he is right in asking advice.


b) it is his duty to ask his higher authority to
take action, because issue raised by union to
be solved on a particular time as per rules.
Was it right on the part of Line Manager to intervene ?

No !!!
a ) it is not his duty .
b ) because it’s a union problem. So director and
personnel officer want to solve the problem.
Now that the Personnel Officer has informed the Director (Personnel) that the Line Manager has intervened, will the relation
between Line and staff get altered

Yes!!! Relation between line and staff will get alter.

a) The line manager has solved the problem without the


advice of the director (personnel)
this may arise the conflict between the line and the staff
relation.
Suggestions!!!!!!
• The organization should be an open door policy.
• Line manager should approach to the personal
officer before he interfere in the situation.
• Interference of line manager in union problem
will create a conflict between line and staff
relations.
