Ifthatbethecase,
I

wonderwhat
their
theory
is
fortheappearanceofthemuchtalkedof
Angel
of
Mons,
which
appeared
in
thesky
on
theWesternFront
duringthe
1914-18
scrap?However,
there
are
exceptions
ineverywalkof
life
andI
beg
todiffer
with/thenon-believers
of
suchthings
as
ghosts
and
apparitions.Seeing
inthe
one
in-
stance
is
believingand
hearing,
even
though
not
seeing

theoldhouse
was
adopted
by
themany
bagmen
for
a
campin
preference
to
camping
on
theground
and
sharing
thebedwiththe
grand
varietyof
slimy
reptilesthat
abound
there.The
varietybegins
withthe
death-adder,
who
is
backedup
by
the
tiger,
black
and
brown
snake,
ofwhichthelatter
is
themost
common
variety,but
they
are
equally
as
ven-omousas
thetiger
and
black.Last
butby
no
means
least
is
a
smallishjoker,
a
silverygreenincolourandverythin.Ithas
a
very
small
headand
itstail
tapers
in
comparison
to
a
whip

NowwhenI
first
went
to
Wallal,
I
was
rather
puzzledby
theabsenceofabocampsroundtheold
house,
even
though
atdifferent
periodsthere
were
quite
a
few
occupants
intheoldhouse.At
long
lastmycuriosity
gotthe
betterof
me
and
I
inquired
the
cause
fromseveraloldnatives.
They
all
give
me
the
one
answer,"Wefellers
frighten
sit
down
longa
that
placenight
time.He
got
debil-debil
sit
down
longa
thatplace.
Everynight
you
can
'ear'emwalkin'about
longa
backverandahcloseup
longa
kitchen."

I
never
laughed
attheidea,forI'd

came
totheconclusionthatafterthat

lal
Downs
landing
andwhenhe
never
turnedup
by
sundownIbetook
myselfto
a

mealandthenturned
in.
I've
always
made
a
habitof
reading,

imagined
Icouldhearfootstepsand
naturally
my
first
thought
was
ofAlec
returning.
Icouldhearthesteps
quiteplainly
now,but
if
Alec,
why
was
he
returning
fromthe
opposite
direc-tion?He
went
outthefrontway.Thesteps,almost
on
the
verandah,had,
come
fromthe
back.
Nowyou
could
distinctly,
hear
them
walking
on
thefloorouttheback
so
Icalledout,"Isthatyou,Alec?"No
answer
and
the
steps
momentarily
halted
andthen
seem-
ingly
advancedtowhere
Iwas
lying.Whatthe
ruddy-."
BeforeIhadfin-ished
addressingmyself,
the
steps
had
pawed

me
and
were
retreatingout
the
frontofthehouse
and
eventuallythey,died
awayinthedistance.

mystery
and
come
to
no
satisfactory
con-
clusion.Iburntthe

with
a
vengeance
that
