Poll Shows Mike KaplowitzGaining Ground on Greg Ball
Large Undecided Voting Block Remains
WHITE PLAINS, NY (October 19, 2010)

poll of the closely-watched 40

Senate Districtseat in New York between
Mike Kaplowitz
(D) (I) and
Greg Ball
(R)shows Kaplowitz cutting Ball’s lead by 10 points from a poll taken two weeks ago.With election day two weeks away, Ball is leading Kaplowitz by just five points.But, a large undecided voting block remains, according to the poll conducted byIona College.When asked whom they would vote for if the election were held today,
44% said Ball,39% said Kaplowitz
and
17% remain undecided
.“Given the margin of error (plus or minus 4.5%), this race can be a close one. Itmay come down to which candidate can drive the undecided voters in their direction,” said Jeanne Zaino, coordinator of the Iona poll and a professor of political science at the college.
 
The poll was commissioned by RNN-TV in cooperation with the WCA Call toAction Campaign’s
Decision 2010 
. The poll included calls to over 10,000registered voters on October 18.The 40
th
Senate District is regarded as one of several key races in determiningthe future balance of the State Senate. The 40
th
includes parts of northernWestchester, all of Putnam and parts of Dutchess.The latest results differ from the first
Decision 2010 
poll conducted on the 40
th
District race on October 1 – 3 which showed 45% for Ball, 35% for Kaplowitz and20% undecided.In addition to candidate preference, the respondents were also asked:

Favorable view 37%Unfavorable view 35%Undecided 28%Zaino noted, “Both candidates seem to have favorability issues, which is unusual,with Kaplowitz seemingly having the most yet to demonstrate to voters since28% are still undecided about their favorability view of him.”

Voters in this second poll were also asked which candidate they trustedmore to help turn around the state’s economy. The results:

9%“Voter opinion in this election year is heavily influenced by pocketbook issues,and voters in this district are currently favoring Ball to work on and fix economicissues. However, the large undecided proportion on this question indicates thatthere is considerable uncertainty in the voters’ minds which means bothcampaigns have a lot of convincing to do,” Zaino commented.Also, 15% of voters polled indicated that they had watched the WCA Decision2010 debate between Ball and Kaplowitz aired on Regional News Network RNN-TV on October 7, 2010.Other notable findings of this poll include:
Non-party voters, which account for about 25% of active voter registrations in the district, are virtually tied in their support of candidateswith 38% preferring Ball to 37% who prefer Kaplowitz, with 24% of thembeing undecided.
Non-party voters are also likely to agree with the statement that all NewYork State elected officials should be voted out of office (52% answeredyes).
