Inexerciseof thepowersconferredby Article145of theConstitution,andall otherpowersenablingitinthisbehalf,theSupremeCourtherebymakes,withtheapproval of thePresident,thefollowingrules,namely:
PART I
GENERAL
ORDER I
INTERPRETATION,ETC.
1.(1) Theserulesmay becitedastheSupremeCourt Rules,1966.(2)Theyshall comeintoforceonsuchdateastheChief Justiceof Indiamay,bynotificationintheOfficial Gazette,appointanddifferentdatesmaybeappointedfordifferentprovisionsof theserules:ProvidedthatproceedingspendingintheSupremeCourtoranyHighCourtinrelationtoappealsbyvirtueof certificatesgrantedunderArticle132(1),Article133(1) or Article135of theConstitutionshall unlessotherwiseorderedby thisCourt,begovernedby therulesinforceprior totheappointeddate,andall stepsthereinshall continuetobetakeninaccordancewiththesaidrules.2.(1) Intheserules,unlessthecontext otherwiserequires-

[(a) advocatemeansapersonwhosenameisenteredontheroll ofadvocatespreparedandmaintainedby aStateBar Council undertheAdvocatesAct, 1961 (25 of 1961);](b) advocate on record’ means an advocate who is entitled undertheserulesto act aswell asto plead for aparty in theCourt;(c) appointedday’ meansthedateonwhichtheserulesshall comeinto force;

(d) Chief Justice’ meanstheChief Justiceof India,andincludesaJudgeappointedunderarticle126of theConstitutiontoperformthedutiesof theChief Justice;(e) CodemeanstheCodeof Civil Procedure,1908(5of 1908);(f) ConstitutionmeanstheConstitutionof India;(g) Court’ andthisCourt’ meanstheSupremeCourtof India;(h) CourtappealedfromincludesaTribunal oranyotherjudicial bodyfromwhichanappeal ispreferredtotheCourt;(i) HighCourtmeans-(i) asrespectsanythingdonebeforethecommencement of theConstitution,aHighCourtwithinthemeaningof section219of theGovernment of IndiaAct,1935; and(ii) as respects anything done or to be done after thecommencementof theConstitution,aHighCourtestablishedbyorrecognisedundertheConstitution;(j) JudgemeansaJudgeof theCourt;(k) judgment’ includesdecree,order,sentenceordeterminationof anyCourt,Tribunal,JudgeorJudicial Officer;(l) prescribed’ meansprescribedby or under theserules;(m) record’ inPartII of theserulesmeanstheaggregateof papersrelatingtoanappeal (includingthepleadings,proceedings,evidenceand judgments) proper tobelaidbeforetheCourt at thehearingof theappeal;(n) Registrar’andRegistry’meanrespectivelytheRegistrarandRegistryof theCourt;(o) respondent’ includesanintervener;(p) therulesandrulesof Court’ meanstheserulesandincludetheformsappendedtotheserules;
