Journey Back to School
Academic Strategies for the CommunicationProfessional  Unit 9 Final Project
Timothy R. Berman5/23/2009
The Journey back to school for me is a long awaited goal that is finally realized and achieved. The abilityto return back to school has opened up new desires, goals and a vision for personal enrichment andprofessional development for a specific employment opportunity that I have always dreamed of having.A slow process and achievement that will eventually be fulfilled in many ways  to become a self-employed freelance writer and a successfully published author.

Introduction ±
 An Opportunity opens up
Granted, there is much trepidation I have about returning back to school. I have to reinventmy current schedule to fit in my studies and time to accomplish the assignments. One of the mainconcerns my wife had is the question of time. When would I have time to focus on my studies? After we discussed this, we have come to a consensus. What this means is that I am stepping out of my comfort zone, finally making an active effortof working towards something I know I will truly enjoy. Providing the ability to move into a position where I can become fully self-employed as a writer and freelancer.

etting a New Course ± I have a vision
It is often said that a man without a vision is a man without hope and direction. I am a personal testimony to that saying. While I had dreams, I lacked the necessary action to producethe effort, make the sacrifices necessary to achieve some of those dreams. Majority of this wasdue to a previous mental thinking that life owed me something. People owed me a chance to bewho I wanted to be. The reality of it was that no one owed me anything and that the only personthat kept me from being me, was my own self-identity. We sometimes can be our own worstenemies. However, now that I have found stability in my life, goals are becoming more and moreof a reality to make. Each step leads me into the right direction of where I want to be and what Iultimately want to accomplish in my life.

 Part of the
Academic Strategies for the Communication Professional
class was to assess whattype of communication style the student possesses.
ii
According to Patterson¶s chart, mycommunication style is that of Assertive. What this means is that I possess the type of communication where I
express my needs, wants and feelings directly and honestly. Don¶t assume you are correct or that everyone will feel the same way. Allow others to hold other viewswithout dismissing or insulting them.

iii
After having reviewed this type of communication style, and the revelation of it, I have been very cognizant of how I communicate effectively andefficiently with other people; both, verbally and nonverbally.

 y personal Values
The overall core value is Family. Without Family, all other values are without any pillar of strength. Why I say this is because our core values stem from our family. This carries over in our  personal, romantic and professional lives. It is the foundation of all things. However, the more Ithink about it, the more the following come to mind in this exact order:1) Perseverance. This is the strongest value I have.2) Learning/Knowledge is not just something we garner through education, but through lifeexperiences and the many life lessons we find ourselves learning.3) Loyalty. The first thing, in my opinion, is that we have to be loyal to ourselves no matter what obstacles are facing.4) Authentic. Much like being true to ourselves, one value I have learned personally, and as awriter, is being authentic.
