In fall 2007 I went on a trip with my dadto Graves Mountain Georgia to look for minerals and rocks ata public dig! It was our first trip to a rock dig and it was veryinteresting and surreal. It was like a scene frozen in timewith only the sounds of picks against rocksto waken you up!Imagine driving for almost 5 hours through the GeorgiaCountryside then passing through massive Atlanta only todrive a few more hours into the deep country. A few hours pastAtlanta on I-20 we turn on onto a small state road that took usthrough some old Georgia’s oldest towns toward Lincolnton,Georgia. Many of the old houses looked like they were built inthe early 1800’s. It was like we were back in time and the mostexciting thing in town was the train that would remind you of other life in the world. Some of the houses were Queen Ann and most looked likeAntebellum and some older. Anyway after we pass a few oldGeorgia County towns and pass about a million trees we finallysee a sign to the dig. We had driven from Northeast, Alabamaalmost to the South Carolina line near the mountain lakewilderness. We pull onto a dirt road and a pull into to park. We walk to theentrance and are greeted by a few people and pay the entrancefee for the dig. Once we get all signed up we take a few minutesto look at the rocks and crystals at tables.

I saw a rock pick for a really great deal and grabbed it! Thenwe set out on foot with picks in hand a few buckets as well assnacks and water. After about 10 minute walk we are led to asmaller pit where about 20 people were pecking around thechurt like rock. I had never before seen so many people so intolooking at the earth at one time, it was really amazing to see somany looking for rocks and crystals. We looked for a while in the small pit and didn’t have muchluck, or you can say we weren’t really sure what we werelooking for! After pecking around with goggles and looking wegot tired and bored. We decided to leave the small pit and walk toward the bigger pit. It took about 19 minutes to get aroundthe hill and once we cressened the hill we could see for whatseemed like hundreds of miles into the east Georgia countryside pure into South Carolina. Looking down there was thishuge pit exposing high rock walls all around with red waterquery with a perfect reflection of the Georgia and CarolinaBlue sky!As we walked the trail around we started to see more peoplewalking around looking for rocks. Once we got closer to the digsite we started to see large rocks around and we got closer andwe started to hear the loud hits of metal on rock. Once we gotto the dig site we were blown away by awesome spectacle. There were guys banging on rocks the size of my car and therewere guys and girls digging into the side of the mountain. Itappeared that there were holes dug into the side of themountain and into the crevices.

It really just started to me hit me that all these people weredead intent in digging into the mountain looking for rock, notany rock but more a very expensive crystal. I really didn’tknow what everyone was looking for until I took a break andwalked back out to entrance for a break. I talked to an old-timer who showed me what everyone was digging for.It was a crystal that was deep crimson to almost a black coloras was very glassy! He said that the prior dig that a womanfound a piece bigger than here had that she was offered a heftyamount of cash right after she found it! She turned down thesubstantial amount and waited to get an estimate and found itto be worth near 30,000! Hard to believe that something foundin the mountain was worth so much. The old-timer said thatthere was a great amount of money involved in finding a veinof Rutile!Imagine finding a vein that is worth fifty thousand, what aboutsay 80, make that a whopping 100,000 bucks! It is rumoredthat some veins have been worth much more! The only catch isgetting it out! You might get lucky and dig in a hole a find thebeginning of a vein and find a really nice piece, but the crack between the rock is to tight and impossible to get to! What is soamazing is that is the goal of many of diggers! Getting deeperinto the mountain after the last guy is a goal and may pay off well if you tapped into a nice vein of the jewel! The old guy said that you could dig a vein for month’s evenyears before you got all the good stuff. He said it could verydifficult and watched a group of 3-5 guys dig everyday forweeks to get a vein out. He said if you found something on adig, that the odds are that you would run out of time to reallyget into something nice. Or you could get lucky and findsomething really nice like a geode on the ground. He laughed
