Welcome to Sabah!
T
he only other time I had ever beento Tawau was in 1992 with 15friends from school for an inter-dis-trict tournament. I didn’t get to seemuch of the town, but as luck wouldhave it, this year I got another chance tosee what Tawau has to offer andexplored some of its best attractions, featured on pages 10 and 11 of thismonth’s issue. In July, Sabahans celebrate the NunukRagang, a significant symbol of theKadazandusun history, with rituals thatdate back to the dawn of their race.Head to Ranau to witness this interestingevent, as described in our Happeningsand Highlights. Other cultural highlightsare the Gambus Festival, which is a cel-ebration of the traditional lute and theRumbia Festival, also known as theSago Fest which celebrates a plant thatplays a part in the lives of the locals.Expect more than just music and demon-strations at these events, festivals likethese often present visitors with an eye-opening experience about the differentcultures and beliefs that exist in ourbeloved Sabah. This month’s Through the Lens sectionfeatures photographs taken by SarahLim, who enjoys taking snapshots ofSabah’s landscapes and people. We would love to feature more of whatothers see in Sabah and are calling forphoto submissions from you to beshown-off in this section. Check outpages 12 and 13 for more details andcall 088 232121 for more informationon how to get your photos featured. In the mean time, enjoy this month’sissue of Sabah Malaysian Borneo andhave a pleasant stay!
