October 22, 2010
I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful autumn. The children have
been working very hard in fourth grade and are beginning to really
blossom this year. We have many upcoming events that I will list on
the bottom of the letter. Parents are welcome to come to our
Halloween party next Friday at 1:30. Please have your child pack their
costume in their book bag and they will be able to change here at
I will send home reminders next week for when your parent teacher
conference is scheduled. The first quarter report cards will be coming
home on Monday, November 1, 2010.
We have been learning a lot these past several weeks. In math class,
we will be starting multiplication and will do mad minute quizzes
beginning the week of November 1. It is very important for the
children to review their facts, either with flashcards, or Internet games.
We just wrapped up our energy unit in science and will be moving onto
studying matter. The kids did a great job on the geography and map
of New York quiz. Now we are starting our first social studies unit on
New York. In reading, the kids have been showing great progress in
their independent reading by choosing just right books and reading
each day. Lastly, they did an outstanding job of completing their first
writing piece in writer’s workshop. They picked any topic of their
choice, and the purpose of the project was to take a piece through the
writing process. We are now beginning to study memoirs.
