Learning Purpose:
“Technology also gives studentsopportunities for taking ownership of their learning.
Student-managed electronic learning portfolios can be part of apersistent learning record and help students develop theself-awareness required to set their own learning goals, express their own views of their strengths, weaknesses, and achievements, and take responsibility for them.
Educators can use them to gauge students’ development, andthey also can be shared with peers, parents, and others whoare part of students’ extended network.” (NETP, 2010, p.12)
Assessment Purpose:
“Many schools are using electronicportfolios and other digital records of students’ work as a wayto demonstrate what they have learned. Although students’digital products are often impressive on their face, a portfolioof student work should be linkedto an analytic framework if it isto serve assessment purposes. The portfolio reviewer needs toknow what competencies thework is intended to demonstrate, what the standard or criteria forcompetence are in each area, andwhat aspects of the work provideevidence of meeting thosecriteria. Definitions of desiredoutcomes and criteria for levelsof accomplishment can beexpressed in the form of rubrics.(NETP, p.34)
