PROTECTED CULTIVATION
As a result of globalization of trade and
liberalization of Indian economy, there is an immense
scope for export of high value flowers and vegetables
from India, besides, meeting the increased demand in
domestic market. The need of the hour is to increase
the productivity and quality of produce to meet the
demand of quality conscious consumers. A break
through in production technology that integrates market
driven quality parameters with the production system,
besides ensuring a vertical growth in productivity is
required. One such technology is “Protected cultivation”,
or generally called greenhouse technology. It is the
technique of providing favourble environmental
conditions to the crop. It is rather used to protect plants
from the adverse climatic conditions by providing
optimum conditions of light, temperature, humidity,
carbon dioxide, etc. and by adopting modern techniques
like micro irrigation, fertigation etc. for the best
growth of the plants to achieve maximum yield and
superior quality.
In India protected cultivation on commercial
scale was started during early nineties and Karnataka
is one of the leading states in adopting this technology.
Earlier it was started around Bangalore and recently
progressive farmers in North Karnataka around Belgaum,
Dharwad, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Shimoga, Sirsi etc. have
started protected cultivation of flowers and vegetables.
To meet the needs of the farmers of this area and for
the benefit of the students, University of Agricultural
Sciences, Dharwad established infrastructures for Hi-
Tech Horticulture in the main campus during the year
2006. Under this project various structures like
greenhouses of different types, shadowhall, polytunnel,
shade and net houses were established on an area of
3.0 ha for protected cultivation and mass multiplication
of plants. Computerized irrigation and fertigation system
has been adopted for all the structures. For the last
three years production technologies have been
developed for high value crops like rose, carnation,
gerbera, anthurium, orchid. colour capsicum, tomato
and exotic vegetables.

km). Dharwad is located near western ghats at 678 m
above MSL. The weather during December will be
pleasant with a maximum temperature of 280-300 C and
a minimum of 120-150 C. The participants are advised
to bring warm cloths to attend the Winter School.
