agreed upon as a strategy in March1948 by Ben-Gurion and his consultancy, with theintention to control at least the land that the UNpartition allotted for the Jewish state with the leastamount of Palestinians. Today we would call this planethnic cleansing. Historian Ilan Pappe documents thesystematic detailing of villages by Jewish forces thatallowed Plan Dalet to come to fruition.
These operations can be carried out in the following manner: either by destroying villages (by setting fire tothem, by blowing them up, and by planting mines intheir debris) and especially of those population centerswhich are difficult to control continuously; or bymounting combing and control operations according to the following guidelines: encirclement of the villages, conducting a search inside them. Incase of resistance, the armed forcesmust be wiped out and the populationexpelled outside the borders of the state(Plan Dalet, 10 March, 1948)(4)
At the time when Plan Dalet wascirculated, Jewish BrigadeCommanders had lists of villages for which they wereresponsible and the ways thatorders would be carried out:Occupation, destruction orexpulsion.(5) Village details hadbeen collected much earlier in the1930-40’s by the Hagana and academicians.(6) Around the time of the UN Partition and prior toIsraeli independence, the Arab League established andfunded the Arab Liberation Army, recruiting volunteers to fight against Jewish military forces inPalestine.(7) During the fighting, Jewish military forcesperpetrated a number of crimes against indigenousPalestinians. In the quotes that follow, Ilan Pappedescribes the crimes in gruesome detail. On April 9, 1948,

Atleast ninety three Palestinian villagers were killed incold blood, their bodies abused while a number of thewomen were raped and then killed. Of those killed, thirty were babies.(8)On May 22, 1948, Jewish soldiers from the Alexandroni Brigade occupied
and shot110-230 Palestinian men. As Pappe documents:
The Jews gathered all the women and children, in a place where theydumped all bodies, for them to see their dead husbands, fathersand brothers and terrorize them
