When my wife Alice and I inter- viewed Vicky Starr in 1969 and 1971 fora collection of oral histories called “Rank and File,” Vicky called herself “StellaNowicki” because she didn’t want heremployer at the time (the University of Chicago) to know about her radicalactivities in the 1930s. When we inter- viewed her again for a second collectionmore than a quarter century later, shehad retired and had no problem usingher real name. Vicky Starr was the child of EasternEuropean immigrants. She grew up on afarm in Michigan. “We had no electricity. We had outdoor privies,” she said. Vicky ran away from home at age 17 because“there was not enough money to feed thefamily during the Depression.” Vicky’s father had been a coal minerand had bought a few books about Leninand Maxim Gorky. She recalled that when Sacco and Vanzetti were executed“the foreign-born people were in mourn-ing for a week.” The family practiced what Vicky’s father described as a social-ist idea, “No work,no eat.” Agnes, a womanfrom Chicago, hadcome to the farm forher health. Agnesinvited Vicky to go back to Chicago with her. Vicky at

HerbMarch suggested she get a job in thestockyards. Vicky began in the “cook room” where women cut big chunks of meatinto smaller pieces to make hash. She worked six-hour shifts at 37 1/2 cents anhour.

Vicky joined the CatholicSodality and the Young Women’s Chris-tian Association. The women who Vicky worked withpracticed solidarity by restricting output within agreed-upon limits. But they didn’t want to pay union dues. Againit was health and safety that opened adoor. One of the women became para-lyzed because of the intermittent freez-ing air to which the line was exposed, and died. “Within a week we organizedthat whole department,” Vicky said. Women often did harder work thanthe men and were paid less. Within theunion, staff jobs went only to men. “I would be approached by men for datesand they would ask me why I was in theunion, so I would tell them that I was forsocialism.” Vicky learned to play pooland bowl, and got men into the unionthat way. From 1938 to 1940, the Packing-house Workers didn’t have bargainingrights. There was “tremendous ferment.” Vicky recalled:
You had this sense that people wereready to get together, to protect each other... It did happen that

 just closed down.
By the 1940s the union would bringa sound truck and thousands of people would show up for meetings in themiddle of the stockyards at noontime.“The union leadership would be negoti-ating within a particular plant on a griev-ance [and if] the matter wasn’t settled by a certain time, the whole department would walk out,” Vicky recalled. In 1945, with the union recognizedand the war over, Vicky left packing. and had three children. Around1950 she went back to work as a secre-tary at the University of Chicago. The National Labor Relations Board(NLRB) decided that the “appropriate bargaining unit” was clerical work-ers throughout the whole university. There were 1,800 of them. More than 18 buildings had to beorganized. After otherunions tried andfailed, the Team-sters launched acampaign. Vicky hadno use for the localunion president whomade $200,000 a year. But 21 stewards were elected by secret ballot before theNLRB election and Vicky, by that time working for the Department of Educa-tion, was one of them. Eighteen of thenew stewards were women. As in the stockyards, grievances werepursued and won before union recogni-tion. And after union recognition “thestewards became the bargaining com-mittee,” Vicky said. Vicky worked for another ten yearsafter the union was recognized. Gregarious as always, she gotinto conversation with the secretaries. She told them “we helped to organize theunion,” and their response was “thank  you, thank you, thank you.” Vicky introduced us to two friendsand fellow spirits, Katherine Hyndmanand Sylvia Woods, and the three be-came the protagonists of the documen-tary movie, “Union Maids.” Sylvia, an African-American, helped to organizea United Autoworkers (UAW) local atBendix during World War II. Now with the miners themselvesrolling in money, they are probably nottoo concerned about receiving their mis-erable wages, but there are thousandsof other less-fortunate workers whoare languishing in one of the country’s Workers’ Hospitals, to the indifferenceof their companies, without any wagesas long as they remain unable to work due to injuries they got on the job. That'scapitalism. But let’s not forget that 439 workersdied in workplace accidents in this coun-try in 2009, and where was the solidarity for them? Where were all the efforts tosave them from their mines or from allthe various workplaces they died in? Forthem there was only the indifferent gazeof the authorities or the criminal en-trepreneurial class—439 human beings with the same abilities, the same right tolive, laugh and enjoy the good things of life as the 33 miners brought back fromthe dead.Beyond the happiness we all feel forthe good fortune these workers havehad, escaping with their lives, beyondthe plastic, show business smiles, beyond all the presidential visits andhugs, beyond all the “generosity” beingparaded before the cameras, I still think of the thousands of unfortunate work-

Icannot help thinking about the 32 Mapu-che political prisoners, some under theage of 18, who were considered “terror-ists” and who were left to waste away ona hunger strike which was hidden fromthe eyes of the national and internationalpress, and who are being treated in adisgracefully paternalistic way by thegovernment. I cannot help thinking of allthis, despite my immense joy at seeingthe miners returning to us. What a hypo-critical country!a mere 1.8 percent. He did not takekindly to having his live music re-placed by a machine.“They were playing music to inter-fere with our industry,” he said.City police arrested Loomer andcharged him with two counts of mis-chief. He was convicted on May 25, 2010 with a sentence of 12 months proba-tion and 20 hours community service.Loomer represented himself and has ap-pealed, saying the city failed to provide, by law, informationhe could have used inhis defense and thathe has rights underthe Canadian Charterof Rights and Free-doms to make a livingand enjoy his free-dom of expression. He objected to thecommunity service as“the slave-style prac-tices of government”for appropriating hislabor power.Loomer’s appeal will be heard on Nov.12, 2010 at the city courthouse.Prior to the incident, Ottawa hadintroduced restrictive bylaws requiringstreet performers to get a license andperform in designated spots chosen by the city. But now, Ontario’s Safe Streets Act, brought in to target squeegee kids, buskers and other street people makinga living on the province’s streets, has setthe stage for tighter controls on informal workers.looming in the ILA’s mastercontract, which expires in two years. Early talks may begin assoon as the beginning of next year, and Adams said the ILA action in September stem in partfrom widespread frustration overautomation on the docks andtwo-tier structures throughoutEast Coast ports.Just as important, Adamssaid, was showing dock bosses—and younger members—that the
