Healthy hair, a dermatological perspective
S.Aravinth Vijay Jesuraj, Asso.Professor, Dept. of Pharmacy PracticeS.S.R College of Pharmacy, Mahabubnagar- 509001
In today's hectic lifestyles and pressurized lives, hair loss is a natural outcome evenamong otherwise healthy individuals. Health surveys show that, stress, pollution, loss of sleep and excessive work are some of the common reasons people sufferfrom hair loss. Dermatologists have often cited hormonal problems, child delivery, and side effect of medicines as well as fungal infections as causes for hair loss too.
 Hair growth cycle
Hair goes through a constant cycle of growing (anagen phase) and resting andshedding (telogen phase). Sometimes much of the head will be in the same cycle,so a large amount of hair comes out at once; new hair is growing in at the sametime, but because hair falls out faster than it comes in, thin hair will be the result.Usually within 6-12 months, the hairs will once again be out of cycle, so you willonly lose about 100 hairs a day instead of thousands at a time. Stress, whetherphysical or emotional, can cause the hairs to cycle all at once
Rate of Synthesis of Hair-Keratin
Hair grows at a rate of 15 to 20 cm/yr. All this growth is concentrated at the baseof the hair fiber, where keratin filaments are synthesized inside living epidermalcells and assembled into rope like structures The fundamental structural element of keratin is the
helix, which has 3.6 amino acid residues per turn and a rise of 5.4 Åper turn Assuming that the biosynthesis of helical keratin chains is the rate-limitingfactor in the growth of hair, calculate the rate at which peptide bonds of keratinchains must be synthesized (peptide bonds per second Keratan sulfates (Greek
“horn”) have no
uronic acid and their sulfate content is variable. They arepresent in cornea, cartilage, bone, and a variety of horny structures formed of deadcells: horn, hair, hoofs, nails, and claw
sCommon causes for hair fall
Androgenic alopecia - male pattern baldness,
female pattern baldnessAlopecia areata - patchy hair loss, Alopecia totalis
loss of hair throughout thebody, due to altered immune system or of fungal infection
Traction alopecia -
the loss of hair due to its continually being pulled by certainhairstyles, such as tight braiding or ponytails, or by the unconscious habit of twisting the hair.
Telogen effluvium - Severe illnesses (usually with high fever) and medications canboth cause temporary loss of hairSome drugs may promote temporary hair loss like birth control pills, otherhormones, anticoagulants, allopurinol, some anti-inflammatory drugs and someblood pressure medications and cancer-therapy drugs
Strong or frequent dyes, permanents and bleaching may cause a temporary loss of hairRarely long-term swimming and hot tub use may cause a temporary loss of hair.
Hair grooming and maintenance
Maintaining the scalp is of more important
than that of hair itself. As the scalpforms the base for the follicles to produce new hairs care should be taken inmaintaining it. The oily secretion, which is secreted over the scalp by specializedcells, goes out off balance most of the time. This is in similar fashion to that of thesebum secretion.Dry scalp may result in less secretion which is marked in dry skinned persons. Thisproduces fissures and infection which will affect the anagen phase of the cycle.Abundant secretion results in accumulation of dust and blocks the pores which alsoretard the growth and favor the shedding of hairs. So it is essential in regularshampooing and applying oil or creams to the hair.Hair dyes mostly alkaline innature affects the surface environment and damages the hair.
