The Six Bls

"Of course you face challenges. Every generation that has ever walked the earth has faced challenges. We could spend the entire evening talking about them. But of all the challenges that have been faced in the past, the ones we have today, I believe, are the most easily handled. I say that because theyare manageable. They largely involve individual behavioral decisions, but those decisions can be made and followed. And when that

happens, the challenge is behind us."

"Pioneer Puzzle Game," Friend, July 2004, 24

To play the game, you will need: a die and a game piece such as a bean or a button for each player.

Instructions: Remove pages 24-25 from the magazine. Cut out the puzzle pieces in the center of the ga me boa rd, glue them to heavy paper, trim, and set them aside. Then mount the game board on heavy paper. Take turns rolling the die to move forward from the square marked "start." When you land on a square with words, follow the instructions or answer the question written on the square. If you can follow the instructions or answer the question, put a puzzle piece in place. If not, it's the next player's turn. If a player lands on the same square more than once, he or she can choose another player to follow the instructions on the square. Continue moving around the circle until the puzzle is completed.

Be Humble

The Lord has said, 'Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers' (D&C 112: 10) .... 1 believe the meek and the humble are those who are teachable. They are willing to lead. They are willing to listen to the whisperings of the still, small voice for guidance in their lives. They place

the wisdom of the Lord above their own wisdom."

Lesson Be Humble

Bamboo:

Once upon a time, in the heart of the Western Kingdom, lay a beautiful garden. And there, in the cool of the day, the Master of the garden was wont to walk. Of all the denizens of the garden, the most beautiful and most beloved was gracious and noble bamboo. Year after year, bamboo grew yet more noble and gracious, conscious of his Master's love and watchful delight. but modet and gentle widtal. And often when the wind came to revel in the garden, Bamboo would cast aside his grave stateliness, to dance and play right merrily, tossing and swaying and leaping and bowing in joyous abandon, leading the Great Dance of the garden, which most delighted the Master's heart.

Now, once upon a day, the Master himself drew near to contemplale his Bamboo with eyes of curious expectancy. And Bamboo, in a passion of adoration, bowed his great head to the ground in loving greeting.

The Master spoke: "Bamboo, Bamboo, I would use you."

Bamboo flung his head to the sky in utter delight. The day of days had come, the day for which he had been made, the day to which he had been growing hour by hour, the day in which he would find his completion and his destiny.

His voice came low: "Master, I'm ready. Use me as Thou wilt. "

"Bamboo, II -The Master's voice was grave -"I would have to take you and cut you down!

A trembling of great horror shook Bamboo .... "Cut. .. me ... down ? Me .. who thou, Master, has made the most beautiful in all thy Garden ... cut me down! Ah, not that. Not that. Use me for the joy, use me for the glory, oh Master, but cut me not down!

"Beloved Bamboo," -The Master's voice grew graver still- "If I cut you not down, I cannot use you."

The garden grew still. Wind held his breath. Bamboo slowly bent his proud and glorious head. There was a whisper.

"Master, if thou cannot use me other than to cut me down, then do thy will and cut." "Bemooo. beloved Bamboo, I would cut your leaves and branches from you also. rr

"Master, spare me. Cut me down and lay my beauty in the dust; but would thou also have to take from me, my leave and branches too?"

"Bamboo, if I cut them not away, I cannot use you."

The Sun hid his face. A listening butterfly glided fearfully away. And Bamboo shivered in terrible expectancy, whispering low: "Master, cutaway."

"Bamboo, Bamboo, I would yet. ... split you in two and cut out your heart, for if I cut not so, I cannot use

you."

Then Bamboo bowed to the ground: "Master, Master ..... then cut and split"

So did the Master of the garden took Bamboo ... and cut him down ... and hacked off his branches .... and

stripped off his leaves and split him in two and cut out his heart

And lifting him gently, carried him to where there was a spring of fresh sparkling water in the midst of his dry fields. Then putting one end of the broken Bamboo in the spring and the other end into the water channel in His field, the Master laid down gently his beloved Bamboo .... And the spring sang welcome, and the clear sparkling waters raced joyously down the channel of the bamboo's trn body into the waiting fields. Then the rice was planted, and the days went by , and the shoots grew and the harvest came.

In that day Bamboo, once so glorious in his stately beauty, was yet more glorious in his brokenness and humility. For in his beauty he was life abundant, but in his brokenness he became a channel of abundant life to his Master's world.

Lesson Be Humble

"I am Third"

There was a boy who was very popular among others his age. He was an excellent leader in his school groups. One of his friends visited him and saw a homemade plaque in his room with the words ."1 Am Third" on it. His friend asked him what it meant and he replied, "It is the motto I try to use in my life. It means. "God is first. Others are second, and I am Third."

The driving force in our lives should be trying to please God. Secondly, we should take into consideration the needs and pleasures of others. With our own pleasures subordinated, we will truly be the humble servants of God.

Before class teach one of the children (family member) how to do the following puzzle. Giveeach of the children(family members) a piece of paper and a pencil. Ask them to draw three even rows of dots with three dots in each row --nine dots in all. Ask the children(family members) to start in the upper left corner and draw through all nine dots with four straight lines withoot lifting their pencils. After the children have attempted to connect the dots. have the child you explained the puzzle to show the other children how it is done by following the accompanying illustration.

• ••

• ••

• ••

Explain that beca=ause the children could not figure out the puzzle by themselves. they had to be taught by someone else. We can learn from everyone. and to be willing to learn from others is to be humble. A humble person is not too proud to get help and gain knowledge from others. A humble person is teachable.

"God is fiRST,

Be Prayerful

"You need His help, and you know that you need His help. You cannot do it alone. You will come to rea;ize that and recognize that more and more as the years pass. So live that in good conscience you can s[eal with the Lord. Get on your knees and thank Him for His goodness to you and express to Him the righteous desires of your heart. The miracle of it all is that He hears. He respnds. He answers - not always as we might wish, but there is no question in my mind that He answers"

Be Clean

Avoid evil talk. Do not take the name of the Lord in vain .... Choose your friends carefully .... While you should be friendly with all people, select with great care those whom you wish to have close to you ....

Be clean. Don't waste your time in destructive entertainment. ...

How truly beautiful is a well-groomed young woman who is clean in body and mind. She is a daughter of God in whom her Eternal Father can take pride. How handsome is a young man who is well groomed. He is a son of God, deemed worthy of holding the holy priesthood of God.

He does not need tattoos or earrings on or in his body. The First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve are all united in counseling against these things .... There is no need for any LaUer-day Saint boy or girl, young man or young woman, to even try [drugs]. Stay clean from these mind-altering and habit-forming addictions.
