Leaders Preserving our Future: Pace and Priorities on Climate Change
Executive Summary
This Insights Paper has been designed to accompanythe World Preservation Foundation’s (WPF) campaignon getting the domestic and international politicalcommunities to recalibrate their priorities on climatechange. We have drawn extensively on establishedscientific studies to deliver a report which calls forgreater focus to be placed on tackling shorter-livedclimate forcers such as methane, black carbon andozone emissions.
Whilst acknowledging the important role of carbondioxide (C02) emissions in global warming, the WPFhas arrived at the conclusion, informed by leadingscientists, that tackling shorter-term climate forcersis indispensable to mitigating the threat of imminentclimate tipping-points which could soon be breached asa result of human activity.

The report proceeds by addressing the environmentaldamage of these forcers, in relation to carbon dioxide, and then explores the important role of food productionand the livestock sector in emitting such substances. It concludes by providing recommendations anddiscussing potential areas for government action whichcould both help make farming more environmentally-friendly and stimulate more sustainable modes of livingon our planet.

The report’s key points are as follows:
The importance of short-term climate forcers versuscarbon dioxide emissions
We discuss the way in which reducing carbon dioxideemissions has become the dominant political discussionon climate change abatement and the extent to whichshorter-lived climate forcers like methane have beenmarginalised even though they have a much greatercapacity to trap heat (this despite being less voluminousin the atmosphere). We also set out the need for nearer-term solutions toglobal warming, citing various reports which predictimminent climate tipping-points catastrophic to ourecosystems and which engender the need for actionwhich will rapidly cool our planet now. Reducing thoseshort-term forcers which are at the same time moreintense in their global warming effect and more easilyand swiftly eradicable is presented as the best strategygoing forward.
Food production, farming and the environment: theenvironmental impact of the livestock industry
We discuss the role of livestock farming and foodproduction in contributing to the emission of methane, ozone, black carbon and nitrous oxide, as well theirwider environmental impacts. We also consider theCommittee on Climate Change’s assertion concerningthe UK’s poor record in making farming moreenvironmentally friendly.
Recommendations for change: more environmentally-friendly farming and living practices
We provide recommendations for the way in whichthe UK government can assist in working with farmers, industry and consumers to encourage sustainablefarming methods and healthier life-choices in line withrecommendations to shift diets away from animal-based proteins towards plant-based foods capable ofalleviating pressures on the environment.
