Balanced Math is an approach to teaching mathematics. I've prepared aquick summary of what a balanced math program can look like based on LeeSparling's book "Balanced Mathematics". She's a teacher in Simcoe County. You'll notice some of the terms resemble the elements of Balanced Literacy. The piece that's missing from this model is the notion of gradual releasewhich should be a part of any effective instruction model.Source: Balanced Mathematics Grades 2-6 by Lee Sparling, 2005The
Balanced Math Program
focuses on understanding the processes andstrategies that lead to effective problem solving. The term “Balanced”describes the equality of learning opportunities for students using the fivecomponents of:∑

Students participate in all five components of the Balanced MathematicsProgram on a rotating five day schedule. With the exception of IndependentMath Journals, students work in small groups where they feel comfortableand more willing to speak out and explore ideas. In small groups studentsdevelop social skills as well as communication skills. They pose and challengeideas as well as seek advice from their peers. Students learn to defend and justify their own ideas.
Independent Math
Students work independently to explain, respond to other students and justify their own thinking about mathematical concepts and ideas. Usingmath word walls and personal math dictionaries, students build theirmathematical vocabulary, make personal connection to their thinking anddevelop their reflective thinking skills. This leads to a more comprehensiveunderstanding of mathematical concepts.
Shared Problem Solving
Small groups of students work together to solve a mathematical problem.Shared problem solving gives students the opportunity to explore and build
