Since the release o my frst Mouse and Bear book,
A Visitor for Bear,
I’ve heard rom countless parentsthat their toddlers are going around declaimingthings like: Impossible! Intolerable! Insuerable! What could be more satisying and delightul asa writer than seeing your words become part o someone’s childhood? When I wrote
A Visitor for Bear,
I certainly hopedand expected that kids would pick up on therepeating phrase “There was the mouse!” Ater all,it was built into the very structure o the book, withclear clues as to when Mouse would show up againand a page turn so that kids could anticipate thesoon-amiliar phrase “There was the mouse!”I loved it, but wasn’t totally startled, when I heardabout three-year-olds ordering their siblings to“Begone!” Who could resist that! But what I really didn’t expect was the boy whodeclared that he was going “back to the business”o reading his book, just as Bear consistently went “back to the business o making his breakast.” Another mother told me about her daughter wholoved to randomly add “or good measure” to herconversation.

Big Words for Little Kids
At the International Reading Association Conference in Chicago, author Bonny Becker discussed the magic of words big and small in her award-winning books about curmudgeonly Bear and his irrepressible friend, Mouse. This is an excerpt from that speech.
