Next-generation SONET/SDHsadvantage over Ethernet
Next-generation SONET/SDH is anumbrella term describing a range of proprietary and standards-based devel-opments that are built on the availableSONET/SDH infrastructure. First deployedby long-distance carriers as a way to sup-port new services such as Ethernet, FibreChannel, ESCON, and DVB, next-genera-tion SONET/SDH enables the delivery of high-speed, high-bandwidth data withinvery tight budget constraints.

Ethernet’s proliferation in LANs is largelydue to its simplicity and cost-effective-ness. Standard Ethernet line rates are10/100/1000 Mbps with 10 Gbpscontending for a significant presencein the MAN. Because Ethernet is basedon a best effort principle, meaning thetransfer of data is not guaranteed, thereis concern that Ethernet cannot fullyprovide the quality of service, security, redundancy, and restoration capabilitiesrequired for both data and voice traffic. The new Ethernet standard, 10 GigabitEthernet, will not only be 10 times faster than its predecessor, but it is designed topromote the convergence of networkingtechnologies. However, to send a 10 Gigabit Ethernetsignal directly to a legacy SONET ADM,Ethernet line termination equipmentmust buffer the incoming signal and con-vert it into a signal supported by SONET.Although Gigabit Ethernet provides acommon frame from the desktop to thebackbone, a technology that serves as atransport service for storage, raw data, and audio/video, independent of the pro-tocol, was needed. Fibre Channel (FC) wasdesigned to remove many performancebarriers that exist in legacy LANs andchannels providing scalable gigabit tech-nology, control, self-management, andreliability at distances up to 10 K.However, when FC leaves the SAN andinteracts with SONET/SDH, errors andpacket loss occur.Although TCP corrects for this, delays andreduced bandwidth cause performanceproblems.Next-generation SONET/SDH extends theutility of the existing SONET/SDH networkby leveraging existing layer 1 networkingand including technologies such as vir-tual concatenation (VC), generic framingprocedure (GFP), and the link capacityadjustment scheme (LCAS).
