January 1849.Harrison County,My dear Sir,Texas,In the mutations of men and things, I have been fairly cut loose from my ancientmoorings; and one wave of misfortune has succeeded another, until my fortune, and well nighmy prospects, have been engulphed in one common grave – A sacred regard for, and practice of those duties which make up the character of the honest man, I can never cease to cherish; and if Ican transmit nothing else to my children, a character “sans peur et sans reproche” shall be their heritage –. The Message of the President of the UStates – a production worthy of man and theage – in its felicities description of our newly acquired California pos-sions [

], has stimulatedemigration there. Among the numbers who wish to seek their fortunes in that wild and distant but inviting region, I am enrolled –. I take the liberty in writing you now, unexpected andunlooked for as it may be, to ask that you will interest yourself in [

] my behalf, with thePresident, to procure an appointment, which will assist me in locating in California – A place inthe Custom House – Post Office department – or in any department, for which I may have therequisite qualifications [
