Wikipedia states the following on Avvaiyar, the author of Āththisūdi

Auvaiyar (Tamil: ஐவ஬஦ார்)(also Auvayar) was the name of more than one poet who was active during different periods of
Tamil literature. They were some of the most famous and important female poets of the Tamil canon. Among them,
Auvaiyar I lived during the Sangam period (c. first and second century C.E.) and had cordial relation with the Tamil
chieftains, Pari and Athikaman. She wrote 59 poems in Purananuru (தைந஢ாதெறு).

Auvaiyar II lived during the period of Kambar and Ottakkuttar during the reign of the Cholas in the 13th century C.E. She is
often imagined as an old but intelligent lady by Tamil and primarily referred by them as Auvai.

Auvaiyar II wrote many of the poems that remain very popular even now and are inculcated in school textbooks in the State
of Tamil Nadu. These books include a list of dos and donts, useful for daily life, arranged in simple and short sentences.

Abithana Chintamani states that there were three female poets in the name of Auvaiyar.

The translation by Veeraswamy Krishnaraj is based on interpretation of words in Tamil Lexicon, Madras
University.

Let us praise and worship the feet of the son of Siva, the
Konrai Venthan. Son of Siva = Ganesa.
1. Mother and Father are the first-known deities.
2. Worship in the temple is very good.
3. Domestic life is easier; ascetic life is a hard pursuit.
(Apart from domestic life, there is no better virtue.)
4. The riches of the parsimonious fall in the hands of evil
people.
5. Eating less means beauty to woman.
6. Earning hostility in your town ruins your roots.
7. Math and Grammar are worthy as your eyes.
8. Children doing favors to parents unasked are like
ambrosia.
9. Though reduced to begging, do what needs to be
done.
10. Stay in one place holding the friendship (of the
virtuous).
11. Brahmana's duty is recitation of Vedas
12. Uttering envious words brings destruction of riches.
13.Earn grains and money with frugality.
14. Chastity is not going against the word (of the
husband).
15. Safeguarding chastity is woman's beauty.
16. It is better to forget what is unattainable.
17. Though lowly, talk with them with humility.
18. Finding faults means loss of relatives.
19. Though in possession of sharp arrow, do not talk
valorous.
20. If a friend does harm to you, give up on him.

35. Owners of gold will obtain virtue and the rest.

37. There is no Mantra greater than a father's words.

39. Seek wealth riding the waves of the ocean.

41. There is fire on the lap of a woman who trembles not
(at her husband's misfortune).

43. If God becomes angry, one's austerities self-
destruct.

45. In the months of Thai and Masi, sleep in rainproof

46. Eating food obtained from plowing is sweater than
food after worship (prasadam = sacrament).
47. Do not talk about your penury even with your friend.
48. Bad company causes distress.
49. There is no evil, if the country is in order.
50. Stead-worthy learning is not to go against one's
word.
51. Though drought hits, stay inside your town.
52. You should think through even a small task, before
you do.
53. Knowing the precepts of sacred texts, behave
virtuously.
54. There is no treachery, which is not hiding in your

Seeking God's Blessings.
The devotees who approach with the flowers and
without remiss the feet of the red coral-colored sacred
body of Vinayaka with proboscis, will obtain good
speech, good mind, and the auspicious glance of Lotus-
seated Lakshmi; their bodies will not tremble (with
diseases).
The steady Coconut Tree that grows without any
weariness, offers by its head (the coconuts) the water
that it drank at its feet (roots); Likewise, when help is
given (to a good soul), there is no need to consider
when he will reciprocate the help. 1
The help rendered to the good people (the grateful)
appear like letters written on the rock. Help rendered to
the loveless (ingrates) is like the letters written on water.

Penury during youth gives grief to the joyous youth.
During miserable old age, even the joyous things give
misery. The flower that blooms out of season is like the
wasted beauty of the nubile lass without a lover. 3
Though boiled, the taste of milk does not diminish.
Unfriendly (hostile) people, though offered friendship,
would not become friends. Though the great are
degraded, they remain great people. The conch though

The tall trees, unless the fruiting season comes, will not
bear fruits. Though one endeavors hard, the initiated
tasks will come to fruition only at the proper time. 5
Some people are of the nature to give their life for others
at the time of trouble. Would they do it when they see
the enemies? A granite stone breaks and falls, if it
bears a great weight. Would it give and bend? 6
Water-lily rises to the limits of water. Wisdom is limited
to the treatise and one's own learning. One's wealth is
limited by the austerity in previous birth. one's character
is limited by the family (he is born into). 7
It is good to see good people. It is beneficial to listen to
wise words of learned people. It is a joy to praise the
good qualities of virtuous people. It is good to associate
with them. 8
It is dangerous to even see evil people. It is dangerous to
listen to the impious words of the blasphemous. It is
wicked to discuss the character of the evil people. It is
vile to associate with them. 9
The water irrigated to the rice fields goes along the
canals and percolates to the grass. If there is one good
man in this ancient world and on his account, the rains
pour forth for the benefit of all. 10
Antecedent to sprouting, what sprouts (and yields) is
unhusked rice. Once the husk comes off, the rice will not
sprout and yield. The entrepreneur with great power
cannot complete the humongous undertaken task without
(outside) help. 11
Lotus leaves are big. Makizam flowers (with small leaves)
are fragrant. Ocean is huge, but is not suitable for
removal of body dirt. Do not disregard a short person.
Near the ocean, a small spring may become drinking
water. 12
They are not the good trees with branches and twigs,
standing in the forest. The one standing in the midst of an
assembly unable to read the long leaf, handed to him and
the one who does not take the cue: Both of them make
good trees. 13

The wild turkey, seeing the forest peacock play with its
glittering plumage, considered itself the peacock and
spread its plumage. Likewise, the uneducated (assuming
as the learned) learns (and interprets) the poems (with
errors). 14
The poison expert who treated the diseased stripped
tiger became its food. Unknowing of his own
perishability, the help rendered to the unappreciative is
like dashing a clay pot on a rock. 15
The common crane, letting the fry pass by in the canal,
pines away waiting for the big fish. Likewise, do not
think of the patient ones as ignoramuses, easy of
vanquishment. 16
The birds leave the dry lake; likewise, leaving one with
poverty is not a mark of a relative. The Kotti plant,
Water-lily and Netal lily stay together in that pond. 17
The noble ones, though reduced to poverty, remain
noble. What happens when the base people become
poor? When the precious gold pot breaks, it remains
gold. When the clay pot breaks, what value does it
have? 18
One-quart vessel, even if immersed deep into the
ocean, will not draw four quarts of water. Likewise,
though a maiden obtains a spouse and riches, each
one is subject to one's own destiny. 19

Endogenous disease kills from inside; do not assume
siblings and relatives would be of help. There are some
like the herbal medicine from the mountain, not
cognate with you, which will cure you of your disease.

There is not a thing missing, if a homebody (=
இல்னாள் = home person = wife) is home. Homebody
may as well be absent, if the homebody utters harsh
words; that house is a bush with a tigress. 21
O stupid Mind, thou art prone to lamentation and full of
ignorance. Expecting good results, you obtain a (bitter)
strychnine nut from a wish-tree (஑ற்த஑ம்). The reason
for such (reversal) is the evil deed done in the previous
life. Now you see it is (God's) writ for you. 22
A degenerate person's extreme anger causes a split as
in a slab of rock. (It does not heal.) It is comparable to
split-up with a woman. The anger of a noble person
causes a split comparable to the split caused by the
arrow shot in the water. (The split in the water heals.)

As the swan complements flowers in the lotus lake, the
learned desire to associate with the learned. The crow
tastes the carcass or corpse in the crematorium
grounds. Likewise, an ignoramus celebrates other
ignoramuses. 24
The venomous snake, knowing its poison, hides in its
lair. The water snake without fear lies about in the
open. The deceitful people lie hidden (from the public).
The honest people do not hide. 25
If a king and a flawless scholar are compared, the
scholar is greater than the king. For the king, there is
no greatness outside his kingdom. For the learned,
greatness awaits him wherever he goes. 26
To the delicate plantain tree, its yield is its death knell.
To the unlettered, the firm words of the learned are the
death knell. To the unrighteous, righteousness is the
death knell. To the married woman, not acquiescing to
her husband is death knell. 27
The soft Sandalwood, as it thins into a paste from
rubbing and grinding, does not lose its fragrance.
Would a mighty king become frugal-minded (lose his
philanthropic streak), if his wealth diminishes from
charity? 28
Affectionate and sweet relatives, superior aspirations,
ஆகும்ததா(து) அ஬தபாடும் ஆகும்; அ஬ள்திாிந்து

உள்பது எ஫ி஦ எரு஬ர்க்(கு) எரு஬ர்சு஑ம்
த஑ாள்பக் ஑ிவட஦ா கு஬ன஦த்஡ில் -த஬ள்பக்
஑டதனாடி ஥ீண்டும் ஑வ஧த஦நிணால் ஋ன்
உடதனாடு ஬ாழும் உ஦ிர்க்கு. 6
஋ல்னாப் தடி஦ாலு ஋ண்஠ிணால் இவ்வுடம்தை
good looks and elite family accompany the arrival of Sri
(Goddess of fortune). When She leaves, the auspicious
things leave with Her. 29
Trees let man cut them down; they offer cool shade by
hiding man (from the scorching sun). Likewise, the
intelligent ones, when faced with evil from others that
may cause their demise, would protect them to the
best of their ability. 30
O Beauteous, great, elephant-faced, pure Gem! I offer
You a sacrament of milk, clear honey, jaggery syrup, &
lentils. You give me the three Sangam Tamils
(இ஦ற்ந஥ிழ், இவஓத்஡஥ிழ், ஢ாட஑த் ஡஥ிழ் = Literature,
Poetry, and Dance in Tamil). 0
Merit is worthy; sin is unworthy. These deeds, done in
the days past (previous births) bear fruits for men born
on this earth. Upon reflection, there is nothing different
that can be said by other religionists. Do meritorious
acts to remove sin. 1
If one has to declare, there is nothing but two castes
on this earth: The great ones, straying not from just
path, care about giving and the ungenerous are the
base castes. That is what is in the Sacred Texts. 2
This body is in a state of motion (between death and
rebirth). It is a suffering on top of suffering. Do not
regard this false body as real. Not believing that this is
a permanent body, give away quickly (your wealth to
the indigent). You will obtain relief from the great pain
of the disease (of metempsychosis) and at the end
attain Mukti (liberation). 3
One does not think of doing a good deed unless merit
abides in him. It is like the blind who flings his Mantra
staff on a tree to yield the mango. When merit comes
to him, that mango will fall by itself. 4
Things do not come, even on earnest calling. Things
that befall you do not leave. Languishing, thinking
about them for long and sleeping over them are the lot
of man. 5
For one, possessions are lost; he cannot experience
the joys of others. Therefore, in this world if the
embodied souls go overseas, (make money) and come
back on land, of what use is it? 6
Considering by all measures, this body remains the

ஆற்றுப் ததருக்கு அற்று அடிசுடும் அந்஢ாளும் அவ் ஆறு
ஊற்றுப் ததருக்஑ால் உனகு ஊட்டும் - ஌ற்ந஬ர்க்கு
஢ல்ன குடிதிநந்஡ார் ஢ல்கூர்ந்஡ார் ஆணாலும்
இல்வன ஋ண ஥ாட்டார் இவஓந்து . 9
ஆண்டாண்டு த஡ாறும் அழுது தை஧ண்டாலும்
஥ாண்டார் ஬ரு஬த஧ா ஥ா஢ினத்஡ீர் - த஬ண்டா!
஢஥க்கும் அது஬஫ித஦! ஢ாம்ததாம் அபவும்
஋஥க்த஑ன்? ஋ன்(று) இட்டு, உண்டு, இரும் 10
எரு஢ாள் உ஠வ஬ எ஫ித஦ன்நால் எ஫ி஦ாய்
இரு஢ாளுக்கு ஌தனன்நால் ஌னாய் - எரு஢ாளும்
஋ன்த஢ா(வு) அநி஦ாய் இடும்வதகூர் ஋ன்஬஦ிதந
உன்தணாடு ஬ாழ்஡ல் அநிது. 11
ஆற்நங் ஑வ஧஦ின் ஥஧தொம் அ஧ஓநி஦
வீற்நிருந்஡ ஬ாழ்வும் ஬ிழும் அன்தந - ஌ற்நம்
உழுதுண்டு ஬ாழ்஬஡ற்கு எப்தில்வன ஑ண்டீர்
தழுதுண்டு த஬தநார் த஠ிக்கு, 12
ஆ஬ாவ஧ ஦ாத஧ அ஫ிப்தர் அது஬ன்நிச்
ஓா஬ாவ஧ ஦ாத஧ ஡஬ிர்ப்த஬ர்- ஏ஬ா஥ல்
஍஦ம் தைகு஬ாவ஧ ஦ாத஧ ஬ினக்கு஬ார்
த஥ய்அம் தை஬ி஦஡ன் த஥ல். 13
திச்வஓக்கு தோத்஡ குடி஬ாழ்க்வ஑ ததசுங்஑ால்
இச்வஓதன தஓால்ற௃ இடித்துண்வ஑ - ஓிச்ஓீ
஬஦ிறு ஬பர்க்வ஑க்கு ஥ாணம் அ஫ி஦ாது
உ஦ிர்஬ிடுவ஑ ஓான உறும். 14
ஓி஬ா஦ ஢஥ ஋ன்று ஓிந்஡ித் ஡ிருப்ததார்க்கு
அதா஦ம் எரு஢ாளும் இல்வன - உதா஦ம்
இதுத஬ ஥஡ி஦ாகும் அல்னா஡ ஋ல்னாம்
஬ி஡ித஦ ஥஡ி஦ாய் ஬ிடும். 15
home for evil worms and many diseases. This, the
learned ones know. Therefore, they remain apart like
the water on the lotus leaf. This, they will not speak of,
to others. 7
O People of the great world, hear me. The things worth
amassing through innumerable efforts will not come by
luck. If they come by luck, they will not remain eternal.
What is worth seeking is civility. 8
In the days without the flow of water, the soles of feet
experience heat (in the dry riverbed). That river will
feed the world from its springs. Likewise, the well-born,
though he becomes poor, will not deny (help to others).

O people of the big world, though you cry and roll year
after year, the dead will not return. Stop crying. For us
too, that is the path. Until we depart, give what you
have, then eat and remain carefree. 10
O my miserable stomach, you will not forego one day's
worth of meals. You will not eat two days worth of
meals. You do not know my misery. It is difficult to live
with you. 11
Tree growing on the bank of a river and privileged life
in the service of a king fall one day. Exaltation is to
make a living by plowing and eating (farming). There is
nothing comparable to it. All other works are tainted. 12
On the beautiful earth, who could destroy the good?
Besides that, who are capable of preventing (the evil)
people from dying? Who will prevent the ever-growing
population entering beggarhood? This is the Truth.13
Upon reflection, worse than begging is living by telling
many desires and compelling others to pay you.
Shame, shame. It is better to give up life than to lose
one's dignity for the sake of growing your stomach
(satisfying one's desires). 14
For the ones meditating on SivayaNama ( ),
there is no danger on any day. This is the only way to
overcome fate. Without Siva meditation, Buddhi
becomes susceptible to fate. 15 .

"அறும்-தா஬ம்!" ஋ன்ண அநிந்து அன்நிடார்க்கு இன்று
த஬றும்தாவண ததாங்குத஥ா த஥ல்? 17
ததற்நார் திநந்஡ார் ததரு஢ாட்டார் ததருன஑ில்
உற்நார் உ஑ந்஡ார் ஋ணத஬ண்டார் - ஥ற்தநார்
இ஧஠ம் த஑ாடுத்஡ால் இடு஬ர்; இடாத஧
ஓ஧஠ம் த஑ாடுத்஡ாலும் ஡ாம். 18
தஓ஬ித்தும் தஓன்நி஧ந்தும் த஡ண்஠ீர்க் ஑டல்஑டந்தும்
தா஬ித்தும் தா஧ாண்டும் தாட்டிவஓத்தும் - ததா஬ிப்தம்
தா஫ின் உடம்வத ஬஦ிற்நின் த஑ாடுவ஥஦ால் ஢ா஫ி
அாிஓிக்த஑ ஢ாம். 19
அம்஥ி துவ஠஦ா஑ ஆநி஫ிந்஡ ஬ாதநாக்கும்
த஑ாம்வ஥ தொவனத஑ர்஬ார் த஑ாண்டாட்டம் -இம்வ஥
஥றுவ஥க்கும் ஢ன்நன்று ஥ா஢ி஡ி஦ம் ததாக்஑ி
த஬றுவ஥க்கு ஬ித்஡ாய் ஬ிடும். 20
஢ீரும் ஢ி஫லும் ஢ினம்ததா஡ியும் த஢ற்஑ட்டும்
ததரும் தை஑ழும் ததரு஬ாழ்வும் - ஊரும்
஬ருந்஡ிருவும் ஬ாழ்஢ாளும் ஬ஞ்ஓ஥ில்னார்க் த஑ன்றும்
஡ரும்ஓி஬ந்஡ ஡ா஥வ஧஦ாள் ஡ான். 21
தாடுதட்டுத் த஡டிப் த஠த்வ஡ப் தைவ஡த்துவ஬த்துக்
த஑டுத஑ட்ட ஥ாணிடத஧ த஑ளுங்஑ள் - கூடு஬ிட்டுங்(கு)
ஆ஬ி஡ான் ததா஦ிணதின் ஦ாத஧ அத௅த஬ிப்தார்
தா஬ி஑ாள் அந்஡ப் த஠ம். 22
த஬஡ாபம் தஓருத஥ த஬ள்தபருக்குப் த௉க்குத஥
தா஡ாப தோற௃ தடருத஥ - தோத஡஬ி
தஓன்நிருந்து ஬ாழ்஬தப தஓடன் குடிதைகுத஥
஥ன்தநா஧ம் தஓான்ணார் ஥வண. 23

In this ocean-girt world, know there are wonders: The
water for the benefit of the earth; the giving of gifts by the
good; the inseparable grace of the eyes; the strength of
chastity of women. 16
Realizing in this world that the benefactors in the past life
cut the knots of sin in this birth and knowing sins remain
from the past, would blaming God (for your sins) bring
wealth in the present? Would an empty pot boil over?
He will give to parents, offspring, great compatriots in this
world, relatives, friends and others, though they cause
hurt. The non-givers will not give even when they
surrender to him.
Because of the severity of hunger, we offer obeisance,
beg, traverse the clear oceans, extol others, rule the earth,
sing panegyrics and ruin this body all for a measure of rice.

The patrons celebrate the prostitutes with conical breasts.
It is like crossing the river tied to a grinding stone (instead
of plying by a boat). That is losing great wealth and sowing
the seeds of poverty. It is not good for this and future
births. 20
The red-lotus-seated Sridevi confers to the honest
abundance of water, shade, plenteous paddy, fame and
name, luxurious life, village, growing wealth, long life all
the time. 21
O men of ruin, hear me thou. You buried the wealth you
earned with great effort. O sinners! who will enjoy that
money (wealth), after life leaves your body. 22
The one who exhibited partiality in a place of justice will
have his house infested with evil spirits, overrun by White
Madar plants with flowers, and creepers. Mudevi (the
penurious sister of Sridevi) will live in the house. The
snakes inhabit the house. 23

஋ல்னார்க்கும் ஑ள்பணாய் ஌ழ்திநப்தைம் ஡ீ஦ணாய்
஢ல்னார்க்கும் ததால்னணாம் ஢ாடு. 25
஥ாணம் குனம் ஑ல்஬ி ஬ண்வ஥ அநிவுவடவ஥
஡ாணம் ஡஬ர்உ஦ர்ச்ஓி ஡ாபாண்வ஥ - த஡ணின்
஑ஓி஬ந்஡ தஓால்ற௃஦ர்த஥ல் ஑ாதொறு஡ல் தத்தும்
தஓி஬ந்஡ிடப் தநந்து ததாம். 26
என்வந ஢ிவணக்஑ின் அதுஎ஫ிந்஡ிட் தடான்நாகும்
அன்நி அது஬ாித௅ம் ஬ந்த஡ய்தும் - என்வந
஢ிவண஦ா஡ தொன்஬ந்து ஢ிற்தித௅ம் ஢ிற்கும்
஋வண஦ாளும் ஈஓன் தஓ஦ல். 27
உண்தது ஢ா஫ி உடுப்தது ஢ான்குதொ஫ம்
஋ண்தது த஑ாடி ஢ிவணந்து ஋ண்ணு஬ண - ஑ண்தைவ஡ந்஡
஥ாந்஡ர் குடி஬ாழ்க்வ஑ ஥ண்஠ின் ஑னம்ததானச்
ஓாந்துவ஠யும் ஓஞ்ஓனத஥ ஡ான். 28
஥஧ம்தழுத்஡ால் த஬ௌ஬ாவன ஬ாத஬ன்று கூ஬ி
இ஧ந்஡வ஫ப்தார் ஦ா஬ரு஥ங் ஑ில்வன - சு஧ந்஡தொ஡ம்
஑ற்நா ஡஧ல்ததால் ஑஧஬ாது அபிப்தத஧ல்
உற்நார் உன஑த் ஡஬ர். 29
஡ாம்஡ாம்தொன் தஓய்஡஬ிவண ஡ாத஥ அத௅த஬ிப்தார்
த௉ந்஡ா ஥வ஧ த஦ான் ததாநி஬஫ித஦ - த஬ந்த஡
எறுத்஡ாவ஧ ஋ன்தஓ஦னாம் ஊத஧ல்னாம் என்நா
த஬றுத்஡ாலும் ததாத஥ா ஬ி஡ி . 30
One's own past deed one experiences (Karma)
Lotus-seated Lord sets the way to the trap-- O king
Evil doers, what can we do? The town as one
Hates; Would the fate go away? 30
இழுக்குவட஦ தாட்டிற்(கு) இவஓ஢ன்று; ஓாலும்
எழுக்஑ம் உ஦ர்குனத்஡ின் ஢ன்று - ஬ழுக்குவட஦
வீ஧த்஡ின் ஢ன்று ஬ிடாத஢ாய்; த஫ிக்஑ஞ்ஓாத்
஡ா஧த்஡ின் ஢ன்று ஡ணி. 31
The ruins are the following: the forehead without Vibhuti;
food without ghee; the beauty of a town without a river; a
body without siblings; a household without a wife. 24
If the expenses exceed income, consequences follow:
Losing one's honor; losing one's mind; becoming a thief
whichever direction he goes; earning sin in seven kinds of
birth; becoming wicked to all the good people. 25
When hunger strikes, the following ten entities fly away:
Self-respect, dynastic name & fame, education,
bounteousness, intellectual gift, charity, austerity, loftiness,
perseverance, lusting of the dames with honey-sweet
words. 26
When one thinks of acquiring one thing, he may get
something else in its place. Otherwise, he may even get
the desired object. An object that he never thought of may
come before him. These are the acts of the Lord, who
reigns over me. 27
Having blindness of the internal eyes, people can eat a
handful and wear four cubits (of cloth); but, what they think
amounts to ten million things. The life on earth is full of
trouble and tribulations until the (euphemious body of) clay
pot breaks. 28
There is no one here (by the tree) to earnestly invite a bat
(the bird), when the tree bears fruits. (They come on their
own, seeking and seeing the fruits.) When someone offers
ambrosial milk like the cow with calf without withholding,
the world becomes relatives (as the bats descend on a
tree with fruits). 29
O king! People experience (the fruits of) their past deeds
(from previous lives). It is according to the ordainment of
Lotus-seated Brahma. What can we do to the evil doers?
Can fate leave us, when all townspeople join as one body
to hate?
Flawed poetry has good melody. It is good to have
grandeur in the highborn. Flawed heroism even with
unremitting disease is good. It is better to remain alone
from a wife who does not fear slander.

ஆநிடும் த஥டும் ஥டுவும்ததா னாம்தஓல்஬ம்
஥ாநிடும் ஌நிடும் ஥ா஢ினத்஡ீர் - தஓாநிடும்
஡ண்஠ீரும் ஬ாரும் ஡ரு஥த஥ ஓார்தா஑
உண்஠ீர்வ஥ வீறும் உ஦ர்ந்து. 32
த஬ட்தடணவ஬ த஥த்஡ணவ஬ த஬ல்னா஬ாம்; த஬஫த்஡ில்
தட்டுருவும் த஑ால்தஞ்ஓில் தா஦ாது - த஢ட்டிருப்தைப்
தாவ஧க்கு த஢க்கு஬ிடாப் தாவந தசு஥஧த்஡ின்
த஬ருக்கு த஢க்கு ஬ிடும். 33
஑ல்னாதண ஆணாலும் வ஑ப்ததாருள்என் றுண்டா஦ின்
஋ல்னாரும் தஓன்நங் த஑஡ிர்த஑ாள்஬ர் - இல்னாவண
இல்னாளும் த஬ண்டாள்; ஥ற் நீன்தநடுத்஡
஡ாய்த஬ண்டாள்
தஓல்னா(து) அ஬ன்஬ா஦ிற் தஓால். 34
த௉஬ாத஡ ஑ாய்க்கும் ஥஧தொப ஥க்஑ளுளும்
஌஬ாத஡ ஢ின்று஠ர்஬ார் ஡ாதொபத஧ - தூ஬ா
஬ிவ஧த்஡ாலும் ஢ன்நா஑ா ஬ித்த஡ணத஬ ததவ஡க்கு
உவ஧த்஡ாலும் த஡ான்நா(து) உ஠ர்வு. 35
஢ண்டுஓிப்தி த஬ய்஑஡ற௃ ஢ாஓதொறுங் ஑ானத்஡ில்
த஑ாண்ட ஑ரு஬பிக்கும் த஑ாள்வ஑ததால் - எண்த஡ாடீ
ததா஡ம் ஡ணம்஑ல்஬ி ததான்ந஬ரும் ஑ான஥஦ல்
஥ா஡ர்த஥ல் வ஬ப்தார் ஥ணம். 36
஬ிவணப்த஦வண த஬ல்஬஡ற்கு த஬஡ம் தொ஡னாம்
அவணத்஡ா஦ த௄ன஑த்தும் இல்வன - ஢ிவணப்தத஡ணக்
஑ண்ணுறு஬ ஡ல்னால் ஑஬வனப் ததடல் த஢ஞ்தஓ
஬ிண்ணுறு஬ார்க் ஑ில்வன ஬ி஡ி. 37
஢ன்தநன்றும் ஡ீத஡ன்றும் ஢ாதணன்றும் ஡ாதணன்றும்
அன்தநன்றும் ஆத஥ன்றும் ஆ஑ாத஡ - ஢ின்ந஢ிவன
஡ாண஡ாம் ஡த்து஬஥ாம் ஓம்தறுத்஡ார் ஦ாக்வ஑க்குப்
ததாண஬ா த஡டும் ததாருள். 38
O inhabitants of the great world! Like the mounds and pits
created by the river, riches wax and wane. It offers food.
You can draw on potable water. Likewise, Dharma as
one's innate nature will flourish.
The arrow that penetrates an elephant will not penetrate
soft cotton. Hard words will not vanquish soft and sweet
words. Root of a living tree will split a rock, which a
crowbar cannot. 33
When one is rich though not learned, all will go to him and
offer obeisance. The have-not, even the spouse will not
want. The mother who gave birth and raised him will not
want him. His words have no currency. 34
There are trees, which bear no flowers but fruits. There are
people who without direction or prompting are capable of
knowing by themselves. As the sown seeds may become
useless, a simpleton though instructed lacks
comprehension. 35
O maiden with shining bracelets! Crab, oyster, bamboo,
and plantain at the time of death yield their offspring.
Likewise, men about to lose wisdom, riches, and
education, cast their mind on the wives of others. 36
There is nothing in Vedas and other treatises for
vanquishing Karmic fruit. It is nothing more than not
knowing the fruits of karma in our thoughts. O Mind, do not
be anxious. For the ones abiding in Pati with Universal
Truth, there is no fruit of Karma (ஊழ்). 37
Do not entertain these (concepts): I-ness; this is evil; I am;
he did this; this was that; it is this. The standing (monistic)
posture is that you are THAT Tattva. There is nothing other
than itself to tie the cut grass. (A bundle of grass is tied
with a strand of grass stem. The grass bundle and the tie
are one and the same-- an example of monism.) Likewise,
the thing you are searching to subside in Pati, is none
other than yourself. 38

஡ிரு஬ா ஓ஑தொம் ஡ிருதோனர் தஓால்லும்
எரு஬ா ஓ஑த஥ன் று஠ர். 40

஥ின்தணநி ஓடாதொடி ஬ி஢ா஦஑ ணடித஡ா஫
஢ன்தணநி த஬ண்தா ஢ாற்ததும் ஬ருத஥.
஋ன்று தொ஑஥ன் இ஦ம்தா ஡஬ர்஑ண்ணுஞ்
தஓன்று ததாருள்த஑ாடுப்தர்; ஡ீ஡ற்தநார் - துன்தைறுசுவ஬
த௉஬ிற் ததாற௃கு஫னாய்! த௉ங்வ஑ தை஑஫த஬ா
஢ா஬ிற் கு஡வும் ஢஦த்து. 1
஥ாஓற்நத஢ஞ்சுவட஦ார் ஬ன்தஓால் இணிது ஌வண஦஬ர்
ததசுற்ந இன்தஓால் திநித஡ன்஑ - ஈஓற்கு
஢ல்தனான் ஋நிஓிவனத஦ா ஢ல் த௃஡ால் எள் ஑ரும்தை
஬ில்தனான் ஥னத஧ா ஬ிரும்தை. 2

஑ா஡ல் ஥வண஦ாளும் ஑ா஡னத௅ம் ஥ாறு இன்நித்
஡ீது இல் எரு ஑ரு஥த஥ தஓய்தத஬ - ஏது஑வன
஋ண்஠ி஧ண்டு என்றும் ஥஡ி ஋ன் தொ஑த்஡ாய் த஢ாக்஑நான்
஑ண்஠ி஧ண்டும் என்வநத஦ ஑ாண். 6
If a person does not cut the three Malas (impurities) and
internalize the Supreme Substance (Siva) by 30th year of
his life, he is limited to and by his learned wisdom. His lot
is like (the small) size of breasts of the maiden in old age.
(He is not firm, full and robust in his spiritual knowledge.)

O maiden with long cascading tresses dazzling with
flowers! Your lotus hands in consideration of praise offers
with love very sweet fare to the tongue. The blameless
give gifts to the ones who never offered hospitality any

O maiden with beautiful forehead! The harsh words of the
blameless become sweet. The sweet words of others (with
faults) are evil. Was the stone that Nayanar threw at Siva
the flower from the effulgent Sugarcane Bow of the Cupid
that became desirable? 2
O maiden with breasts made of tall golden hillocks! They
milk the unyielding cow with the help of calf. Though they
desire to obtain objects from the niggard, they attempt to
take it (forcefully) from the obligator. 3
The clouds scoop up the water from the vast unwilling
ocean (that does not willingly help others) and give others
the rain. The unshared great wealth, though separate,
becomes the fortune of the helpers. 4
O maiden with flowers on the tresses! Though the husk falls
off the rice grain and recombines as before, its state of
firmness (ability to sprout) is lost forever. Likewise, the
greatness of friendship of inseparable friends, who separate
and later come together, becomes brittle (த஢ாய்஡ல்).
O maiden, having the great sixteen digits of the moon on
your face! When two eyes see, they perceive one object.
Likewise, the loving husband and wife without any
difference of opinion perform one evil-free act. 6
஑டதன அவண஦ம் ஦ாம் ஑ல்஬ி஦ால் ஋ன்த௅ம் The king of the Munis (Agasthiyar) drank the roaring cool ocean. The
அடல் ஌று அவண஦தஓருக்கு ஆழ்த்஡ி - ஬ிடதன
strong lion, which arrogantly boasted that it would vanquish the seas

by its education (hunting skills) jumps and drowns in the ocean. Do

Once upon a time, there was a sage by name Agasthiya. He was a friend of the gods who were intent on vanquishing
the demons (Asuras). The demons went and hid themselves in the ocean, thus making it difficult for the gods to
vanquish them. Agasthiar being an accomplished and perfected Yogi, had many extraordinary abilities. The gods went
to Agasthiyar for help. Being a sage, he drank up the ocean and held it down in his stomach until the gods defeated
the now-exposed demons on the ocean floor.

ததாருந்து஡ல் ஆதண தைதுவ஥ - ஡ிருந்து இ஫ாய்
ஓீ஡஢ீர் ததாள்பால் ஓிறுகுடத்து ஢ில்னாது
வீ஡தனா ஢ிற்நல் ஬ி஦ப்தை. 12
ததருக்஑த஥ாடு சுருக்஑ம் ததற்ந ததாருட்டு ஌ற்த
஬ிரும்தத஥ாடு த஑ாடுப்தர் த஥தனார் - சு஧க்கு
஥வன அபவு ஢ின்ந தொவன ஥ாத஡! ஥஡ி஦ின்
஑வன அபவு ஢ின்ந ஑஡ிர். 13
த஡ாவன஦ா ததருஞ்தஓல்஬ம் த஡ாற்நத்த஡ாம் ஋ன்று
஡வன஦ா஦஬ர் தஓருக்குச் ஓார்஡ல் - இவன஦ால்
இவ஧க்கும் ஬ண்டு ஊதும் ஥னர் ாீர்ங் த஑ா஡ாய்! த஥ரு
஬வ஧க்கும் ஬ந்஡ன்று ஬வபவு. 14
இல்னாத௅க்கு அன்தை இங்கு இடம் ததாருள் ஌஬ல் ஥ற்று
஋ல்னாம் இருந்தும் அ஬ற்கு ஋ன் தஓய்யும் - ஢ல்னாய்
த஥ா஫ி இனார்க்கு ஌து தொதுத௄ல் த஡ாியும்
஬ி஫ி இனார்க்கு ஌து ஬ிபக்கு.15
The moon, though not thinking of removing its own flawed
darkness, remains high up removing the dense darkness of
the world. Likewise, the great ones, not thinking of their
own wants and softened by compassion, render help to
others. 10
A whirlwind twists a small strand of flimsy grass, but its
strength would not twirl a rock pillar. Likewise, the false
five senses, apart from afflicting the small-minded, will
not cause any distress in the explicators of Truth. 11
O the ones with exquisite clothes! Cool water does not
stay in a small pot with a hole. That the water stays in it
is a wonder. Likewise, the distressed life staying in a
nine-holed body is a novelty. (Life leaving by the nine
holes o the body is not a wonder!)12
O Damsel with lactating mountain-high breasts! The
moon's radiation is limited by its (waxing and waning)
size. The High-minded donate willingly according to the
waxing and waning of their wealth. 13
O Damsel with cool flower garland and buzzing bees!
Even the great Meru Mountain is subject to a bend.
Therefore, the first-rate intellectuals, though born into
an imperishable great fortune, do not become
arrogant.14
O virtuous maiden! For the deaf-mute, of what use is
the ancient treatise? For the blind, of what help is the
lamp? Likewise, For the one lacking love, of what use to
him, are owning place, riches, and command (power)?

Banana plant grows from a Rhizome, a rootlike subterranean stem, commonly horizontal in position that usually
produces roots below and sends up shoots progressively from the upper surface. A stalk grows upwards from the
rhizome, produces in 10-15 months a big flower cluster transforming into banana bunches (= ஬ாவ஫க்குவன) which
consist of clusters, hands and fingers (individual bananas).

஥ண்டு தி஠ி஦ால் ஬ருந்து திந உறுப்வதக்
஑ண்டு ஑லுழுத஥ ஑ண். 20
஋ழுத்து அநி஦ார் ஑ல்஬ிப் ததருக்஑ம் அவணத்தும்
஋ழுத்து அநி஬ார் ஑ா஠ின் இவன ஆம் - ஋ழுத்து அநி஬ார்
ஆயும் ஑டவுள் அ஬ிர்ஓவடதொன் ஑ண்ட அப஬ில்
வீயும் சு஧஢ீர் ஥ிவ஑.21
ஆக்கும் அநி஬ான் அனது திநப்திணான்
஥ிக்த஑ாள் உ஦ர்வு இ஫ிவு த஬ண்டற்஑ - ஢ீக்கு
த஬ர் ஆர் அ஧஬ின் தரு஥஠ி ஑ண்டு ஋ன்றும்
஑஬஧ார் ஑டற௃ன் ஑டு. 22
த஑ர்ச்ஓி ஥ட஬ார் த஦ின த஢ான்தை ஆற்நல்
஡ி஑ழ்ச்ஓி ஡ரும் த஢ஞ்ஓத் ஡ிட்தம் - த஢஑ிழ்ச்ஓி
The ocean flows into small backwaters. The high-
minded, though the dependent seekers are lower in
status, would not hesitate to lower himself to their level
and go to them to remove their misery. 16
O maiden wearing golden bangles! He became poor by
giving to the destitute. Would his sons give up charity?
Likewise, the plantain plant dies after offering plantains
and new stalk (in its Rhizome).
O maiden wearing jangling gold bangles! The cool
ocean swells upon the arrival of moonbeams. With the
arrival of sunbeams, the ocean does not swell. People
inhabiting the world surrounded by wide oceans are not
joyous hearing harsh words other than sweet words. 18
Mango tree, with the arrival of south wind, appears
beautiful with sprays of tender leaves. With the arrival of
whirlwind, it appears unhappy. Likewise, arrival of
virtuous people brings on smiling face and happiness.
Arrival of evil people induces distress. 19
O maiden with choice clothes! Eyes cry on seeing the
suffering of other organs from oppressive diseases.
Likewise, the compassionate on seeing the disease of
others think the disease is theirs, and melt like butter in
the fire of mental agony. Know it thus. 20
The torrent of Celestial Ganges becomes placid at the
instance of seeing the shining locks of Siva, the God of
the learned who explore the nature of the letters. The
plenitude of learning of those unknowing of grammar
becomes vacuous on seeing the truly learned. 21
On seeing the big gem, who will remove it from the
(poisonous) snake? Who will seize the poison from
(milk) ocean? Highly regarded high station and lowly
regarded low station should not be applicable by birth
(caste) but by education. 22
O maiden with heaving breasts! Even the rock wears
ததறும் த௉ாிக்஑ின்ந தொவனப் தத஡ாய்! தன஑ால்
஋றும்தை ஊ஧க் ஑ல் கு஫ியுத஥. 23
உண்டு கு஠ம் இங்கு எரு஬ர்க்கு ஋ணித௅ம் ஑ீழ்
த஑ாண்டு தை஑ல்஬து அ஬ர் குற்நத஥ - ஬ண்டு ஥னர்ச்
தஓர்வ஑ ஬ிரும்தைம் தஓழும் ததா஫ில்஬ாய் த஬ம்தை அன்தநா
஑ாக்வ஑ ஬ிரும்தைம் ஑ணி. 24
஑ல்னா அநி஬ின் ஑஦஬ர்தால் ஑ற்று உ஠ர்ந்஡
஢ல்னார் ஡஥து஑ணம் ஢ண்஠த஧ - ஬ில் ஆர்
஑வ஠஦ின் ததாற௃வும் ஑ருங்஑ண்஠ாய் த஢ாய்து ஆம்
தைவ஠஦ில் தைகும் ஋ண் ததாருள். 25
உடற௃ன் ஓிறுவ஥ ஑ண்டு எள் தைன஬ர் ஑ல்஬ிக்
஑டற௃ன் ததருவ஥ ஑ட஬ார் - ஥ட஬஧ால்

உடற்கு ஬ரும் இடர் த஢ஞ்சு ஏங்கு த஧ந்து உற்தநார்
அடுக்கும் எரு த஑ாடி ஆ஑ - ஢டுக்஑தொநார்
தண்஠ிற் தை஑ழும் தணித஥ா஫ி஦ாய் அஞ்சுத஥ா
஥ண்஠ில் தைற௃வ஦ ஥஡ி஥ான். 29
த஑ாள்ளும் த஑ாடும் கூற்நம் த஑ால்஬ான் குறுகு஡ல் தொன்
உள்பம் ஑ணிந்து அநம் உய்஑த஬ - த஬ள்பம்
஬ரு஬஡ற்கு தொன்ணர் அவ஠த஑ாற௃ வ஬஦ார்
ததருகு஡ற்஑ண் ஋ன்தஓய்஬ார் ததசு.30

though you move with the girls on a conversational
level, the mental firmness and strength characteristic of
austerity will wane day by day. 23
In luxurious groves, the bees like the bed of flowers.
The crows like the fruits of the Neem tree (Margosa).
Though one has pristine qualities, It is his fault that the
lowlife is talking ill of him.24
O maiden with dazzling black eyes and eyebrows
looking like the bow and arrow! Imagine a heavy object
placed in a light boat. Likewise, the learned and the
realized good people will not approach (associate with)
the wicked illiterate. 25
O maiden of youth! Seeing the bright poet's small body,
no one can (venture to) traverse the great ocean of his
learning. Tell now, is the sighted radiant sun's
brightness the size of your eye or the size of the
firmament? 26
The erupting teeth grinds the hard food and presents
great taste to the tongue. Likewise, the learned, without
expecting reciprocity, themselves render help, they are
capable of, suffering bodily strain. 27
Eminent people, even at the time of anger, give (to
charity). Cruel people, even at the time of happiness,
will not give (to charity). The plantain, though unripe, is
useful. Is Strychnine fruit, even when ripe, useful, tell
me ? 28
O maiden with cool words! Will the deer in the moon
afraid of the tiger on the earth? (Certainly not.) The
Jñānis with expansive minds (abiding in Supreme Siva),
though their cumulative physical suffering amounts to
ten million, would not entertain fear. 29
Before the life-usurping cruel killer Yama approaches,
save yourself by doing good deeds with mental resolve,
willingness and compassion. Tell me about the
procrastinators, who do not build the barrier before the
floods come in. What will they do when the floods
come in? 30

஑ாழ் என்று உ஦ர் ஡ிண் ஑஡வு ஬ற௃யுவடத்த஡ா
஡ாழ் என்று இனது ஆ஦ின் ஡ான். 32
஋ள்பாது இருப்த இ஫ிஞர் ததாற்நற்கு உாி஦஬ர்
஬ிள்பா அநிஞர் அது த஬ண்டாத஧ - ஡ள்பாக்
஑வ஧ ஑ாப்தை உபது ஢ீர் ஑ட்டு குபம் அன்நிக்
஑வ஧ ஑ாப்தை உபத஡ா ஑டல். 33
அநிவுவட஦ார் அன்நி அது ததநார் ஡ம்தால்
தஓநித஫ிவ஦ அஞ்ஓார் ஓிநிதும் - திவந த௃஡ால்
஬ண்஠ம் தஓய் ஬ாள்஬ி஫ித஦ அன்நி ஥வந குருட்டுக்
஑ண் அங்சுத஥ா இருவபக் ஑ண்டு 34
஑ற்ந அநி஬ிணவ஧க் ஑ாதொறு஬ர் த஥ன்஥க்஑ள்
஥ற்வந஦ர் ஡ம் ஋ன்றும் ஥஡ி஦ாத஧ - த஬ற்நித஢டும்
த஬ல் த஬ண்டும் ஬ாள்஬ி஫ி஦ாய்! த஬ண்டா தைபிங்஑ாடி
தால்த஬ண்டும் ஬ாவ஫ப்த஫ம். 35
஡க்஑ார்க்த஑ ஈ஬ர் ஡஑ார்க்கு அபிப்தார் இல் ஋ன்று

த஢ல்லுக்கு இவநப்தத஡ ஢ீர் அன்நிக் ஑ாட்டு தொபி

ததாி஦ார் தொன்தண ஡ன்வணப் தைவணந்து உவ஧த்஡ ததவ஡
஡ாி஦ாது உ஦ர்வு அ஑ன்று ஡ாழும் - த஡ாி஦ாய் தஓால்
ததான் உ஦ர்வு ஡ீர்த்஡ தை஠ர் தொவன஦ாய்! ஬ிந்஡஥வன
஡ன் உ஦ர்வு ஡ீர்ந்஡஡ன்று ஡ாழ்து. 37
஢ல்னார் தஓய்யும் த஑ண்வ஥ ஢ாதடாறும் ஢ன்று ஆகும்
அல்னார் தஓய்யும் த஑ண்வ஥ ஆ஑ாத஡ - ஢ல்னாய் த஑ள்
஑ாய் தொற்நின் ஡ின் ஡ீம் ஑ணி ஆம் இபம் ஡பிர் ஢ாள்
ததாய் தொற்நின் ஋ன் ஆ஑ிப் ததாம். 38
O maiden with nice wardrobe! The hands rush and take
the blow from the heavy cane meant for the body.
Likewise, the great wise man takes on bravely the grief
of others and rushes to safeguard them. 31
O maiden with good (broad) forehead! The great
diamond-studded heavy door will break down, if the bolt
is not there to hold it up. Lacking intellect to understand
the meaning of what is in the treatises, the religious
rituals have no strength. 32
The barrier holding back the water is guarding the lake.
Is there a safeguard barrier for the ocean? The
ignoramuses, to avoid censure, need safeguard. The
staunch intellectuals do not need it. 33
O maiden having a forehead like the crescent moon!
Barring the beautiful light-perceiving eyes, would the
light-deprived blind eyes be afraid of darkness?
Likewise, barring the intellectuals, the ignoramuses,
deprived of the gift of intelligence, would not be afraid of
impending censure. 34
O maiden with broad forehead and conquering darting
sword-like eyes! Milk desires bananas and detests
vinegar. The great men desire the learned intellectuals;
others would not respect them. 35
At all times, other than irrigating rice fields, would
anyone irrigate the dry grass in the forest? The
excellent persons do not offer help to the enemies,
thus, give to the deserving, and hold back from the
undeserving. 36
O maiden, the one with proximate breasts that removed
the loftiness of Lakshmi. Before the learned, the
simpleton exaggerates his superiority only to come

O virtuous one. Hear me. Though the unripe fruit ripens
late, it is still sweet for eating. When a tender sprig
matures days later, what will happen? Good people's
friendship grows day by day. Bad people's friendship is
not of any good.38

O maiden wearing bangles! The soft flower on a
luxuriant creeping vine has fragrance on the day it
blooms. (Later it withers.) Likewise, the intense
friendship of the unlettered ignoramus causes misery.

O maiden, you are like Lakshmi! Would the limbs and
body wearing the shiny clothes be equal to the eyes not
wearing clothes? Likewise, the king wearing golden
robes would not be equal to the well-educated
intellectuals. 40
