Claire Lubotzky
igital Research Project:
This paper explores the topics that fall under the banner of µnew¶ forms of
in cybernetics
artificial life (ALife) and artificial intelligence (AI).
 Machinic life
implies the forms of nascent life that have been made to emerge in and throughtechnical interactions in human-constructed environments. Thus the webs of connection that sustain machinic life are material (or virtual) but not directly of thenatural world. The notion of machinic life is only fully comprehensible in relation tonew and developing notions of complexity
information processing
and dynamicalsystems theory
as well as theories of emergence and evolution
crossing historicaland disciplinary boundaries. Essentially all of which are traceable in a larger culturalcontext and trajectory that passes over a larger theoretical trajectory such as;Deleuzian philosophy
Katherine Hayles¶ writing on the topics of the: posthuman
cyber-culture as well as many others. Some of which will be explored in thisinvestigation into the cultural implications of these new histories of the forms of machinic and indeed intelligent life; how they came about
operate and indeed howthey are changing. One of the challenges in this case
is to investigate these disciplines
while respectingthe very significant historical
and technical differences in thismaterial
and the diverse perspectives they give rise to. To establish a methodologyfor investigating the relations of precedence and influence in distinctive histories of cybernetics
AI and ALife it is considered that the digital computer played a differentrole in the development of each. In addition
the advent of the stored-programelectronic computer was also contemporary with the birth of these disciplines
resulting in the computer simultaneously becoming an important tool for conceptualizing within the disciplines themselves
giving rise to a complicated nexusof historical and conceptual relationships among the three specified fields of research.Furthermore
the differing understandings of
provide ameans of pinpointing the underlying differences of form and function. (Johnston(2009): 1090) In this framework
every computational assemblage is thought of as a
